    Dead links on desktop

I have two sets of links on my desktop. One set acts exactly as they should, the other set is a mystery. They appeared spontaneously. I'd blame an upgrade, but I'm not sure.
The other set, the dead links, cannot be dragged. Clicking on them does nothing. Resizing the desktop links does not effect them. I've rebuilt the icon cache to no effect, they are not present in any desktop folder. I've tried a couple of third party utilities that claim to detect/clean up broken links to no avail. I'd really like to get rid of them.

So these are shortcuts on your desktop that you cannot delete? When you click on them, do they get selected or not even that?

They look to be the size of small links, but they don't hi-light and clicking on them does nothing.

I just figured it out. The links were part of my background picture. Now, somebody else can figure out how a dozen little .lnk graphics got merged into my background picture.

Sometimes the background isn't refreshing correctly and you see graphics that should not be there. If a reboot doesn't resolve I would just toggle the wallpaper to a different picture and back.

Sounds like somebody took a snap shot of your desktop, with the snipping tool, then set it as your background wallpaper as a prank. It's an oldie but a goodie.

Usually, when you do that prank, you set it so desktop Icons aren't shown. Then it looks like your normal desktop, except nothing happens when you try to click an icon. You can't move them, delete them, or even right click them because they aren't really there.
