Nope - Now if you disable Cortana (in Win10 pro)you get nothing - the whole point of my posting.

    Hello carrotmuseum, :)

If you disable Cortana, you should see a search icon or search icon on the search box instead of a Cortana icon on the taskbar.

After you disabled Cortana and restarted explorer, do you have Show search icon selected (checked)?

@Brink, one of the latest updates means the closest you can get is to sign out:
    Search icon on taskbar-cortana-signout-w10au2.jpg

    gives you this:

    Search icon on taskbar-menusearch.png

It no longer has offline only mode in the settings etc. (and always uses the cortana circle, even after a reboot)

    Hello Aramil, :)

That would be to turn off Cortana,...

...but you can still disable Cortana.

I have three options = hide- show cortana icon - show search box None of these gives the simple mag glass search icon I had previously. If I select show search icon it gives that darned Circle with Ask me anything (which IS CORTANA!!!!)

It sounds like you didn't use the method in the tutorial below to disable Cortana first.
