And yet Cortane cannot be actually turned off or removed! - Well I got it all in English after some hard work then after the update its back to us or uk. its all over place. really sick of p***g about instead of working!! now the third time this has happened. I DO NOT APPROVE OF OUTSIDEINTERVENTION.

Hi, no one forces you to do anything. You're not forced to use Cortana. Cortana (my opinion) is a gimmick, a marketing ploy, responding to Siri e.g. You don't have to use the Win 10 start menu. You don't have to use tiles. You don't have to use the universal apps.

    I don't.

Use Win 10 as a desktop OS. Start thinking of MS as providing an OS not a package that provides everything you need.
Choose the best of class tools that meet your needs. Be happy a good number of those are free.

All that said, MS has made a real mess of handling changes it makes, and in delivering updates and the failures both in those for many and in the delivery of them.

I've not experienced a problem with language settings in the last months - certainly changing language from e.g. US to UK English is not straightforward and lends itself to problems and confusion. Just wondering what your language issue might be?

Did you have a look at the huge Tutorial section? (Which you are free to search....)
Cortana - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

This would appear to address your ? about the search icon - but I only scanned it quickly.

Clearly an old tutorial as that no longer works. Now if you disable Cortana you get nothing - the whole point of my posting.

Disabling cortana DOES work just fine. Then right click on a EMPTY area on your taskbar and choose "Show search Icon"

If that doesn't please you, may I suggest you use a search engine and go looking for yourself?

Not a case of not pleasing me, the fact remains I had this function before and now M/s deem it not necessary.Seems I have to download an independent app. Cortana's reg entry has been amended to stop this very useful feature. Typical M/s and Win 10 big brother. I am moving to Apple asap. No wonder they are flooding the TV with ads for what Apple cannot do (which are lies), but I do know for sure it lets you examine you own files properly!

A Search for touchscreen on Apple shows the ads are correct in at least one respect, no listing showing iMac or MacBook. According to that list the touchscreen is offered only on iPad, iPhone, and iPod. [I have a MacBook Pro now Upgraded to OS X 10.12 Sierra.] A feature that was touted is SIRI which I don't need so I turned it off.

Academic as I do not use/need touchscreen. BUT I seriously have had enough of Win 10 and the attitude of M/s to force anything they like on us, whether we like or desire a "feature". e.g. the new start screen just appeared from this last "update". Then when this latest pile of C*** took over 4 hours to come through and install, to be presented with a screw up of my preferred set up was the last straw.

    Hello carrotmuseum, :)

If you disable Cortana, you should see a search icon or search icon on the search box instead of a Cortana icon on the taskbar.
