I know I can't go from x32 to x64 without a doing a clean install. I'm just wondering if I need to do that now (Win8 x32 to Win8 x64) before the Win10 upgrade comes.

However if I can get the ISO Win10 x64 I'll just wait and do the clean install just one time. I have the WIN8 disks (and install codes). I'm pretty sure the Win8 program came with both a x32 and x64 disk when I bought it.
The free Win10 is an upgrade
Sooooo, bump your Win8 system to x64 before

You might want to get fresh Win8 install media

Well my belief is that it will be as it is now. You can go to a MS website and type in your key and get a download for your os that goes with the key. That system is already in place. So why would it not work that way for this 10 rollout. Give your key get an ISO do what you like if you know how . Upgrade inplace or clean install very simple?

I didn't know that. So I should be able to use my Win8 x64 key to get a download of Win10 x64 (once Win10 is ready).
    Thanks.

I also wouldn't recommend mixing brands of RAM. RAM is sold in kits for a reason, they're optimised to work together. If you want 8GB RAM it would be best to buy a new 8GB kit.

That method that I described is just my thought as how it should be. It has not been officially said by MS. You can take the wait and see approach to be sure of having a good result.

You cannot change the bit depth with an upgrade install - if... you can download the x64 ISO (and I agree you should be able to do that based on the upgrade path matrix I've seen), then only a clean install will change the bit depth.

Maybe we're all saying the same thing in different ways. I suggested biting the bullet now and updating the Win8.1 to 64-bit now to avoid any possible issues down the road (i.e. WU automatically updates Win8.1 to Win10 - which would be the same bit depth as the current install). If that happened, you would have to go through the download ISO and clean install to get to to x64 anyway.

Bill Of course you are correct you cannot upgrade a x86 install with a x64 ISO. So at some point in this op's scenario he must start from scratch. All my thoughts always revolve around clean install is the only way to go. :)
