Sometimes File Explorer Freezes When Renaming A Folder

    Hello,
I noticed on very rare occasions (only on one hard drive) that when I create a new folder, give it a name and press enter, File Explorer freezes for about 30-40 seconds until it creates that name for the folder. I've tried to rename that same exact folder right after this happens, yet this time it does it very quickly and normally. I even tried o create another folder in that same location, yet it does it really quickly too.
I would think that the hard drive needs defragging or something because of the MFT or something. So I defrag with Defraggler, yet it still does it on rare occasions.
This is very rare when it happens, so when anyone replies to this with suggestions, I'll give them a try, yet I wont be able to tell you if it worked, because of how rare this happens. Yet, if it still happens after trying your suggestion, I'll state so saying that it still does it.

    Thanks

I am having the same issue on network folders. I will create a new folder or try to rename a folder and when I click to finish, the dialog box hangs and I have to click the red X to close out the window. At that point Windows Explorer will restart on its own.

I think this is related to Windows Search as I have seen this issue complained of on other sites but so far the only workaround is to turn off Search. I was hoping the update I received today would fix the issue, but it didn't .

I see okay. I would recommend you to just minimize the windows while its hanging until it creates the folder, so you don't click the X and have all your other File Explorer windows that are open, to close too. If you still need to access the folder, reopen a new File Explorer windows and go to your location. But yea, thanks for the info, I'll look around on the internet and see what I find.

    ***HELP!***
I'm having the same problem, but it doesn't seem to correct itself. I try to rename a folder, and it just hangs indefinitely. I have to close the Explorer window, wait a few seconds for it to recover, then go in again.
Anyone got a fix for this yet, please? It's becoming almost a daily nuisance.
    Thanks

I've read that it only happens on networked shared folders, which seems true as that's when it happens to me. I usually try to create or rename the folder first and then if it fails, I create a folder on my desk top, name it and then drag/copy it to the network directory where the folder I wanted to rename is located. Then of course, I delete the folder I wanted to rename after making sure everything in that folder is copied to the new folder.A bit of a pain but at least it works.
