Changing the region to Gabon and back again has indeed worked. There seem to be a lot of complaints of this issue on the web in general. Wonder what caused it.
I spoke to soon as this morning the white search bar is back. The PC in question is currently installing the latest round of updates and so I will see what the state of play is after that.
Is there a fix for this for those of us on version 1803? Registry tweaks don't seem possible and region toggling doesn't seem to do it anymore. Is there an official Microsoft discussion on this we can follow to see if they even care?
You missed the point, mate. I'm not trying to get rid of the search box, I'm trying to revert it to its initial/original color scheme and or theme.
Apparently Microsoft just doesn't give two thumbs for it. More important things tow worry about. What I don't get is how no one's been able to get a registry hack for this.
