Are you trying to save data now or just reinstall win10 ? I see you have a HP recovery partition (d) so you should be able to invoke the HP recovery system and let it wipe the disk and put the laptop back to how you bought it.

The Fat32 partition is actually the Win10 EFI Boot partition which is usually 99mb in Win10 , so perhaps you had win8 ? sorry long thread and a longtime since this started.

basically, i want to try to use the virus checkers like was suggested because of the read-only problem on desktop files, etc. then try to use an in-place upgrade if that is what i need to do since the other solutions didn't work. hopefully, that will work instead of wipe the disk.. maybe HP had put windows 8 on the system before selling it as windows 10, but i don't know. maybe it is restore points from hp installations as opposed to windows restore points. it had downloaded some updates for the system.

i want to save data. simrick i think suggested that i save the os drive and data drive. i want to know what i need to backup. what is the data drive? macrium did not finish a download, and said i can download something from the main file before setup. i am not sure what it is talking about.

Macrium is just a safe guard now as anything imaged with it will still have the same read only issue BUT at least if something really bad happened you could at least get back to where you are now and try again.

You would use Macrium to Image the whole drive ie what Macrium sees as GPT Disk 1 and save it to a Folder on the WD Passport External you have, or what Macrium sees as MBR Disk2.

Macrium was probably trying to get WinPE 10 was it ? to make the Rescue boot CD ? it is about 150mb download for that , it can't make the rescue CD without it.

it seems impossible to backup both. i can only make an image of Windows 10 onto the external drive which also has the read only issue. but do i need to do all of the recovery partitions or whatever to that drive, or just the OS section?

Just C: will save your Data , but for a 1st time Image Back up i would image the whole Drive as insurance 1st. You can also make one of Just C:\ too but you will already have it , with a full disk Image ,as Macrium allows you to only restore a certain partition if you need too.

Eset has a number of downloadable files for Virus removal to , especially if you remember any of the names of anything that was found from other Programs like Hitman , they maybe useful too , eg the Virlock removal program and others.

is there a way to determine how much memory the rescue disk will take? do both the image and the rescue disk need to be the same disk? I see that the image will be a lot of GB and my external drive has a little over 200 gb left. the part to make the image will be around 128 or so gb

the rescue CD disk will be a 300mb approx. Burn it to a CDRW if you have one so you can update it later. it is totally different thing than the Backup Image.

you can delete the Backup image on the External , once you don't need it anymore and get the space back so don't worry.

read only in windows 10 directories. main hd and external-macrium.jpg please see left to right. but top left to left bottom, then right top, to right bottom. maybe the xml file is too big, so it couldn't save the img file. but xml seems small. it almost seems like it tried to save the empty space or make another image after the full..
