You can reinstall anything removed, (it saves your files though) which is the point when you get a virus who knows where it is lurking....

It may be crafty enough to be in your Files , which is why an Inplace Install does not always work and so a Clean install is needed.

you would need a 5GB minimum FAT32 Partition at the front of the Ext. Drive for a Win10 install off it , A Fat32GB 8GB USB Drive is far easier to copy the ISO File to once the ISO is Mounted.

but not everything is available, such as okay, in-place upgrade can attempt to fix.. fresh install can probably simply be done by restoring the system to factory settings (i assume).. don't want to delete stuff that came with the system, as that cannot be restored, such as i have video-editing software that came with my system, and there were no discs provided.

i want to try to save the ISO to the external if the system can boot from that, since that will save money. but on the video, didn't he just put it on the desktop? or did he put it onto the drive? usually iso files are on a disc. i really don't want to keep buying more stuff if it isn't necessary.

You can't boot the external HD to install Windows (without alot of work and knowing what you are doing)

So just make the DVD (burn the iso) and then run Setup from within Windows 10 and keep your files when it askes.

and lets see if it works before worrying about other stuff.....

I would of thought the Drivers and possibly programs are on D:\ that came with the Laptop but perhaps you can only get them if you do a restore?

I don't know, but I don't think I have any dvd, just a dvd drive. why does where it says "system requirements" it says 40 gb needed, but the iso seems like it takes less space? also a lot of dvds seem like they are only 4 GB ( that is what i saw for sale), while some USB drives are larger. I think that it requires at least 8 gb of space. I have Windows 10 Home. Does the in-place upgrade automatically detect the registration key, or do I need to find that? did I ask that? Should I download directly from Microsoft, or media creation tool? I need 64 bit specifically.

drivers came with the laptop, but do you think that an in-place upgrade will remove from D? i don't know if it removes that?? does it keep the drivers directory? there are some drivers in the windows directory.. i don't know what is in D, besides recovery.

You should backup d: partition to your Passport too if not done already, just incase some goes wrong , or you need to do a Factory Restore for some reason eg Ransomware get thru.....

Win10 Installer made with MCT goes onto a 4GB DVD I believe

you need 30-40 GB on the HDD not on the USB/DVD

I usually use an old 8GB USB2 Drive ($5-10?) , but even a 8GB SD Card ( from Camera/phone?) should work if you have a Card Reader already or the laptop has one built in ? .

Win10 Key is Automatic ... you asked that yes....

If you can open D:\ Drive post a pic of it's contents from File Explorer or MTPW perhaps I can tell what is there....Laptop came with Win10?

D: is recycle bin, recovery, boot, preload, efi, sources, system volume info, boot manager. the previous image also backed up d, but it is not D alone. mostly, they are sort of grayed out, and are not file icons.read only in windows 10 directories. main hd and external-untitled.jpg

They are considered "system files" so are greyed out as they don't want you playing with them.

can you open the sources folder? or get it's size?

It looks like it maybe the HP recovery Partition which I think is invoked with the F2 Key ? Your manual will tell you.

not sure if this is your laptop but it looks like HP has everything online too if you need it.... HERE

If D: backed up already ,it is ok , as you can restore individual partitions if needed.

So you can try the Inplace when you are ready.

I have not done it but I think what you are referring too about the video and him starting it off the desktop is probably him Mounting the ISO by RC on it and choosing Mount , ( or open with file explorer if no mount option) , The ISO then appears in File Explorer as a DVD Drive and you can open it and double click Setup.exe to run the Win10 installer from within Windows instead of making a DVD.

That is my laptop I think. The sources file is 67 bytes. Am I able to select an individual partition from one image file? even though that image file may also have some corrupted parts (such as the C: drive)?

I can choose to run the installer from within windows? but is it better to run from the DVD in case windows is corrupted? I am thinking to go buy a usb drive. what is RC?

it is similar to my pc, except there is software that came with my pc that is not there. installing the in-place upgrade will not affect the internet connection, correct? which programs, software, drivers, can be affected?

Your system specs don't include the Full model number I don't think so I wasn't sure if that was the exact model as usually there are different options from within Model to choose from , so there is usually a secondary number too ..on a sticker on bottom usually.

Sources is a Folder , not a file and should hold 3-4GB...... it is the folder Win10 normally installs from...... RC it and choose Properties here is mine....

Normally yes you can choose to restore any partition from within a Backup Image of say a Whole Drive.

RC = right click with mouse

I use a cheap 8GB USB Drive as I don't 100% trust the Running from the mounted Iso ...but that is just me I think....

An Inplace or Repair install should be Run from within Windows , even from the USB , the USB will also allow a Clean install , or as a Rescue Boot if the Recovery Environment is corrupt or does not work ...which is why I always have one handy... extra safety....

Don't know as I don't know what programs HP installs on their Laptops but the only way to guarantee 100% everything is to restore the laptop to Factory State ie to the Day you got it . ..... and lose anything not backed Up.... but you have Images of everything now , so you shouldn't lose anything, but you will have to set stuff up again like your Wifi and any custom stuff like Programs you added. It has the added benefit that it will clear any "Nasties" still lurking anywhere from that Trojan or Keylogger.

15-au023cl unless the product id. I would like to know that if I do the in-place upgrade, while the old installation is renamed, if installed apps that came with windows (such as my temporary subscription to mcaffee) and other things not listed on that page... didn't remain.. can I still do a factory reset? will it re-install the windows that was originally there (and the old apps)? but from my understanding, some stuff will remain.
