start menu shows icons instead of icon with text description

I used to be able to press the windows key and scroll up with the up arrow key to select the power button but now by default, the up arrow key selects the programs instead. I believe this has to do with the left pane start menu becoming marginalized / minimized. Is there a way to fix this?

Many people have been puzzled by the new start menu design from MS, and posted here asking 'What???' - can I go back?. It's described in 100s of articles you can read on the web about changes in the anniversary edition.

1. It's MS's new design
2. No you can't change or configure it significantly (you can disable some of the options down the left side in Settings).
3. Options:
- get another start menu
- complain to MS and wait....and wait..
- use Linux
4. A good number here think it's poor too
