Strange behaviour of pinned menu icons

    Code:
    Rebuilding the Icon Cache Database:
    1. Close all folder windows that are currently open.
    2. Launch Task Manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence, or by running taskmgr.exe.
    3. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
    4. Click the End process button when asked for confirmation.
    5. From the File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run…)
    6. Type CMD.EXE, and click OK
    7. In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:
    CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
    DEL IconCache.db /a
    EXIT
    8. In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)
    9. Type EXPLORER.EXE, and click OK.
    UPDATE

found the above after posting, will give it a try tomorrow, if it works I hope it’s permanent, but no,idea why it happened

the past few days I have seen some of my pinned menu icons lose their graphics, if I resize them then back to where they were ere , the icon reverts to normal.
this first happened with the chrome and Firefox icons, but now two others have been affected.

has anyone seen this before ..it doesn’t happen every time I start up.....but can’t explain why this is happening..

    thanks

I have seen this behavior exhibited when I manually create shortcuts and put them somewhere other than the desktop. I think the problem is produced when two shortcuts exist for a program and are in different location paths. I manually deleted the shortcut I made and the problem went away.

Try to see if more than one shortcut path exists for each of the affected programs and delete the one you created manually (if you did create one) and just use the one provided by the system. I also noticed this behavior if I moved the system created shortcut to a different location as well. Try putting it back where it was if you remember where it was and if you did move it, that could possibly explain the behavior as well.

I'm taking this as you did manually create shortcuts or moved the system created shortcuts?

I hope it wasn't the latter then, because trying to find out where the original location of the system shortcuts for programs were is a pain and sometimes you have to ask someone who has their computer structured properly where they are on their system just so you can put them back unless you have a full system backup before you started changing where system shortcuts are located for programs.

However, I really think the key here is to have only one shortcut per program and if it is a system shortcut created automatically - never move it to another location. I think it's O.K. to copy the system shortcut, but never move it physically from its location is what I'm getting at.

I only created shortcuts pinned menu items in the standard way, nothing fancy...I removed the shortcuts....and recreated them from the original .exe files.....all was ok ......for a few days....now it’s happening again, but it’s intermittent....just annoying more than anything else.....any more ideas ?

You may want to boot in safe mode and go through your start up programs one by one (disabling them one by one) and see if a recently installed program is impacting overall system performance. Disable one program and reboot. If it has no effect or does not affect system performance; re-enable it and move on to the next program in the start-up tab in Task Manager.

Safe mode may or may not be necessary when disabling the programs for testing purposes as some may require networking and some may not.

Eventually, you may come across a program which is causing the system instability and you can click its properties and see what compatibility mode it is running in and try different modes until the system becomes stable again.

Very strange that it is intermittent and was O.K. for a couple of days and then started again.

Overall, it just seems like one of your programs is disrupting the others and it is a trial and error process until you isolate which one is causing it.

This is probably no help, but I've had the same thing with various of the icons/tiles in my Start Menu. Resizing would temporarily fix the problem. Maybe 6 - 8 weeks ago they settled in on just Chrome, Power Point and Word doing this. Not only on boot or restart, but off and on during the day or night. Always the same three and always in concert. Then with the 1809 / 17763.55 Update the behavior has ceased and has not happened since.
