Win 10 per se is not slower.
How much RAM do you have? How often do you fill your RAM? Think probability of paging.
My Win 10 needs about 36Gb (my installed programs and personal data excluded - they are on another partition) but that includes anything normally in APPDATA for example.

Your existing Windows folder will become Windows.old for 30 days after upgrading.

Note: in considering upgrading, this will be to the new anniversary build. Read about this on the net and you will find MS is working on problems (some) people are facing. Add to that any driver issues you may have. Or not.

Best practice: image what you have now fully. (eg. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage
(Everyone should use disk imaging routinely).

Then try the upgrade. You have 30 days to roll back. Note a few have problems with data being lost during this process. Hence: image as fall back and backup.

Lagging should not be your problem as long as you have at least 4Gb RAM.

Have you done a Disk Cleanup? Get rid of all Restore Points and Volume Shadow Copy files and that in itself will give you tons more space. Just a suggestion.

No guarantees.. it depends on (e.g.)
    - how you use your PC - what applications- how CPU/RAM intensive they are
    - whether you have any other problems with Win 10 that cause excessive CPU or disk use - these are reported on this forum as you can see if you search

There are many factors that determine performance, but disk space isn't really one of them. You don't have your System Specs filled in, so we can only guess.

Note warnings of Win 10 possible incompatibility:

Product not tested for Windows 10 upgrade

Dell is not testing or developing Windows 10 drivers for this product. If you choose to upgrade, some features, applications, and connected devices may not work as expected.

    - drivers only to Win 7.

Updating an older laptop to a later OS - even if the OS runs- may give rise to heat management issues as AHCI drivers may not be fully compatible.

It's worth doing a search for

60GB free disk space is no problem, only once you get below 10GB.
