I think if you have pro now you should go for the pro edition of Win10. It's likely the one you will get when you get your free copy with your license.

    Thanks.
I heard Win 10 automatically configures systems with a SSD and HHD for best performance.
If that's true I look forward to see what Microsoft does.

MS did post a blog and it said that when you turn in your license to get a copy/license of Win10 the pro users would get a pro version of Win10.

Quoting you, "when you turn in your license" not sure what that means. If MS wants a valid license key that you can supply (non oem) that would be great, but if MS is going to "take" the license key on the machine that you are currently running is a different situation for me. I am not "turning in" my current machine. The only alternative if this is true is to just flat out buy another license. Don't think MS mentioned any $$ yet? I have a couple of un-used keys from a tech net down load, probably they would not qualify?

At the moment, IMHO, its all just surmising and guessing what's actually going to happen with the free upgrade. Microsoft is just saying enough to make you wonder how it will all unfold. I have yet to see Microsoft state that you will have to surrender a license/product code to get the free upgrade. It wouldn't surprise me if they did, but its not etched in stone yet.

I upgraded from windows 7 to Build 10074. Before I upgraded I cloned my Hard Drive containing Windows 7. Well I got tired of waiting for a new build so I Got out that cloned Windows 7 Hard Drive and then Formatted the Windows 10 Drive and using Macrium Reflect cloned the Windows 7 Drive to the Drive that I had 10 on. All is well, my license is still intact and it is activated. Now MS said that this can be done but this will probably only work with the Insiders Preview Edition and not the released version of Windows 10. My next upgrade will be to the final version although I may install another build on a different drive if there ever is one.

As you've surmised, the tech preview isn't anything to go by. Microsoft isn't going to kill your current install just because you had a look see. It's time bombed to quit after a certain date anyway.

What is your current Windows 7 install? Factory OEM, OEM system builder, or Retail?

I built it with a retail Win 7 Pro license

Ok, was just wondering. That license they could easily take from you if they were so inclined. A factory OEM install not so much, if at all. Factory OEM Windows 7 installs activate against a SLIC table in the BIOS. They don't activate online and all use a common OEM key issued to that manufacturer. They can't block that key.
