Can you go to Settings> System>default apps>set defaults by app. Select VLC to handle all extensions that it can by default.

    right clcik on the file

go to the location of the file and right click on it and go properties ,and just under file type click ,change, this will change the program that's associated with that file type now, to one that should be associated ,and chose the vlc program .I don't have a video file on my computer right now ,but this is what it should look like after you right click on the file..

That's the screenshot after I unticked the box from your previous post.

Sorry, not sure I know what you mean in the post above - do you mean for me to set VLC as default app for everything?

I renamed the extension to mp4 and it changed it to this:

But VLC still won't play it. I think I'll maybe try to burn the file on my work laptop to a CD so I can watch it anywhere...might be my only solution...

Can you play any other .mp4 files on your laptop?
Can you transfer any other .mp4 files from a usb stick?
Can you try resetting those file associations to defaults?

Will try to download other MP4 files on my laptop (as it's new I don't have any other ones). Will do that tomorrow and let you know how I get on.
    I reset to default :)
