On my Windows 10 it was called "CDPUserSvc_1cb43e" and "Connected Devices Platform User Service_1cb43e" what was odd according to process explorer it had used I/O read bytes of 151 Gb! It's doing some kind of reading, and a lot, I just stopped it.

For a comparsion, Google Chrome was second with 11 Gb of reads (which is plausible). But what is CDPUserSvc reading, whole disk?

Connected devices platform is related to the time line, theirs a folder in app data /local called connected devices platform which stores the activity cache, if ever you wanna rebuild the timeline you can stop the service, erase the files in that directory, restart the service and rebuild the index.

Microsoft official Connected Devices Platform Service information

The Connected Devices Platform Service Protocol provides a way for devices such as PC's and smartphones to discover and send messages between each other. It provides a transport-agnostic means of building connections among all of a user's devices and allows them to communicate over a secure protocol.

Yes, this is an old thread, but someone might need to see this (which I am fairly sure is correct, but please set me straight if not).

Having just fixed a fairly difficult hack, I can understand the aggravation of both Microsoft's often mealy-mouthed descriptions of what services do and of having a service running with such a description that you cannot stop (I can't).

unb0b's link to microsoft's belated description says it, but in case you aren't a link-clicker, I want to point something out.

I just now installed Android Studio. Among the stuff I had not noticed before is this service. I've been looking for what it is and why I can't turn it off. I was about to push that effort harder when I found unb0b's link.

It appears that one of the "connected devices" is my pixel6a. That I need, if only by adb for now. So, if you are in the process of trying to brick your android phone, you might want to think it through first. Not that I'm not in favor of stopping any and every service that Microsoft does not care to explain to me - there's no excuse for that lacking.

I'm probably not entirely right about this, but my thinking is that if something is shoved at you without any meaningful explanation as to what it does ("this service is software"), then I'll kill it if I can, with the underlying idea that it's a helper for bloat or malware.

    Don't get me started.

I'm not using this service on my win 10 LTSC 2019 but, other applications might without user consent.

Devices that are always connected to my PC are my KB and Mouse and the occasionally USB stick.

This service I see it as a vulnerability.

I was playing this old game now. Launched in 2017. MY GPU powerful enough to handle the graphic was sitting around average 42 C. Even I was playing single player, I was online. However on second day, online again, the game start rising GPU temp to a whooping 64 C. The only strange present services was CDPSvc listening on port 5050 and connected on 5040 if I'm not mistaken.

I try to replicate the issue, and happen again but, only when I'm online. I don't see the .exe of the game getting connected to any address or listen to the any port but, CDPSvc.
I proceed to replicate the issue of my GPU getting 20 C hotter but, this time I went offline and played with same settings and map to be accurate. The GPU stayed around 42 C as usual.

My 5 cents : The game hashed a % of my card using a legit win10 service.
Is not the developer here, I think is a trend in gaming industry, because is the second game I've see doing thing this.

The first one listen to port 9999 and again difference between offline and online is about 25 C on the GPU.
I didn't use Wireshark to understand exactly how and what are real connection, all services in use and files that are use to provide the "base" for hashing user hardware, at the electricity expense of the user. Of course Nvidia and AMD drivers are not to be excluded.
