i did not read all the responses here, but here is my point of view:

Anyone not having a problem with the fact that MS, Apple, Facebook etc is gathering info about us people, good for you.

I do mind not having some privacy, those not caring well to each his own.

There may come a day you will regret this.
It's not that we don't mind it, its that you're tilting at windmills. The things you're concerned with are the LEAST of the concerns you should have, and really make no difference.

Microsoft, Apple, Google, etc.. they can all track you whether or not you are using an account with their devices. They own the OS, they can add whatever tracking code they want without anyone even knowing. Avoiding using a MS account is silly when MS can see whatever you do in the OS itself. So, either you trust MS not to abuse your personal information, or you don't. And if you don't, why are you even using their OS? Since lack of trust in that alone should be the core concern.

It's like trusting your babysitter with your credit card. If you don't trust them, why are you letting them watch your children?

I would say that MS is really one of the least troubles one has. Moment you are born (and most of the time before) you get tracked and kept record of. Kindergarten, school, hospitals, doctors, banks, drivers license, phones, every time you buy gas, go in a store.... should I go on ? What data did you leave at a bank, ever get a loan ?
Jeez, now when I wrote this, I feel like I'm standing in the middle of town square, naked and barely scratched surface.

I don't mean to sound too Orwellian, (remember the movie, "1984" ? ) Big Brother IS watching!
but when Google publicly announced that they were capturing our browsing information for their own (ads) purposes, I stopped using "Google.com" as my search engine in Firefox.
I did some searching and found a much more private and SAFE search engine, in "IXQuick.com".

Yeah, I know, living in the USA today is like living in a fish bowl, where every bit of info about you is out there floating around on the WWW. I fully expect that when I die, the make and model of my coffin will be out there somewhere.

    Cheers mates!

1984 was long ago, I bet Orwell could not even dream of what else will be possible.

You know of course that originally the book was titled 1948 but as the book was going to be published in 1949, the publisher requested Orwell to change the title to be a year in the future.

Yes I know, red it in '60s and again 1984 or 5 just to compare. It didn't look like it was going to get this bad so soon (with some exceptions).

It's not big brother. Big brother was about controlling people. This is more insidious, it's about tracking EVERYTHING. Data mining... The government, corporations, data is king.

And how exactly do you know they aren't capturing your searches and selling them? Just because they say so? How do you know your searches aren't being captured on the backbone? How do you know IE or Chrome or Firefox aren't capturing your searches and selling them?

You don't really. Regardless of what anyone says.

Everywhere you go are cameras recording what you do. With facial recognition and license plate readers, they can track you wherever you go. Your phone has ping records of everything you do. The phone could be transmitting through its microphone 24/7 and you wouldn't even know it.

What search engine you use is just a placebo. I don't say that to scare you, or to make you paranoid... it's just a fact... and we have to live with it in todays society, or you have to go off the grid and live in a cabin in the woods paying with cash for everything and using subterfuge to hide your activities.
