This *did fix* it for me i.e. restore the former centered behaviour for the text under mid-sized icons in Windows Explorer, as it also did for others in this thread !

If I remember correctly, that fix fixes one thing and breaks another. Windows 10 is a huge mess of little inconsistencies. Windows 7 was not perfect, but was much closer to perfect than Windows 10.

Could very possibly be indeed ! Let's say I'm happy enough to not have discovered yet (suffered from?) the sneaky domino effects of this "fix", wich is an actual workaround.
