Show stopper copying Music from Linux to Windows server
Hi there
I seem to have hit a wretched snag copying Music files from a Linux to a Windows server.
A lot of the files refuse to copy because either directory name is too long, file name too long or a combination of both.
Seems windows has a limitation of 256 - 260 chars. NTFS really is the "Twitter" of File systems with char limitation
I can't rename these music files --I've loads and loads of them and I don't want to rename them anyway -- files are descriptive of what's in them.
So I'm afraid until Windows has a proper file system I'm keeping the Linux server and abandoning using Windows for media serving.
Windows is a fine Desktop OS but for any sort of sensible file / media serving I thing there's still improvements needed to be made --in particular to the file system.
Pity but there we are.
For example : Folder Early Music Cd's
cannot access any music in the folders :
The only get around I can see is to run a Linux VM on the windows server -- this works with HYPER-V as I can attach HDD's formatted with Linux File systems but seems a bit pointless doing that when I already have a server !!!!.
Apart from the wretched file system I LIKE Windows 10 so let's hope Ms update what is now a really old (over a quarter of a century at least) file system. Something with decent journaling, long file names and robust repair possibilities like XFS would be nice.
Cheers
