Moving or deleting takes long -- dialog shows 99% for a couple seconds

Bump, same issue persisting. Renaming files takes a couple seconds as well...

I found that if I create a new user on the system, the issues don't happen while on the new account.

However, the issue remains on my main account...

Renaming/moving/deleting causes a huge memory spike each time (from explorer.exe). Is this normal? What could this mean?



Also, the lag does NOT happen when I rename/move/delete a file within a dialog. For example, when I was uploading the above screenshot, I deleted and renamed a file through the pop-up, and there was no issue (reproducible).

One ting i have found that seems to indicate that it should be possible to get faster results is that when I i use the UtraSearch Utility to locate files. Once it finds them, if i click Delete they instantly disappear. UltraSearch uses a link to the NTFS MFT and possibly this is where the issue lies.

In the links above,one earlier suggesting was to disable the option for archiving under file attributes but doing this takes longer than the few extra seconds of wait time.

Thanks for your response. I checked out the link in detail, but this doesn't seem to describe the problem that I have.

At this point, I'm considering a reinstall and maybe getting some new RAM...

I doubt RAM will help from your posted comments. I think I would consider cloning the "slow" profile into the new one before spending money on RAM. From your description you have pretty much narrowed it down to something related to your specific user Profile. You could try adding a few of your games and such to the new profile to see if/when the problems reappear.

If it doesn't, then you fixed it for free. If it does, it is software related and removing the offending app will probably help more than additional RAM.

I have seen something very much like what you described on my own system with 32 GB RAM and fast SSD. It isn't always an issue but when it occurs, it is extremely annoying and I think (at least in my case) it is related to the way Windows keeps track of file status. In a normal delete it has to double check every byte to be sure it has been cleared for re-indexing into the MFT as an 'available' location rather than in use.

This was why I mentioned that I can see the speed differences when using different ways to delete the same files. Like the difference between a "quick format" and a full format. Your situation may be different though. Good luck with it. I would love to know what you find that fixes it.

I know this thread is old, but I wanted to leave a note here for anyone else who has this issue. I was having the same issue, found this thread looking for a solution, and was eventually able to solve it. Hopefully, this will work for some other people, as well. I recently noticed my file move and delete operations would go really fast and then lock up at the end for some unreasonable amount of time (20-60 seconds or so, maybe longer sometimes). I also tried a different profile as was noted in this thread. Things worked ok there, so that narrowed it down to profile specific things.

This is what I found that fixed the issue for me:
Under folder options I had the two privacy options disabled. I reenabled both of these, closed all windows explorer windows, and reopened to try some moves again. This time there wasn't any delay, just instant/fast results (as it should be since this is an NVMe). I don't get the progress bar at all for moves on the same drive (again, that's how it should be as windows isn't actually moving anything). Even after unchecking these boxes again, everything seems to work ok. Only explanation I can theorize is that maybe something was corrupt with these and even though the options were disabled, it was trying to read/access them, and reenabling them fixed that?

Either way - hope this is beneficial to someone else who encounters this problem

Thanks for posting this. I checked my folder options and those two privacy boxes were selected. I de-selected them. That didn't fix the problem. Then I went back to folder options and selected them again. That didn't work. I'm wondering if I left a windows explorer window open? I'll try again and restart the computer after changing the privacy settings.

In the meantime, if anyone else resolves the problem, please post about it.
