    Just a quick drive-by Cliff

archz2: please launch Command Prompt (Admin) and enter the following

    cd c:\
    dir /a

    cd windows

(post a screen shot, then close Command)

    Thanks - back to Cliff

You need to also post the window shot for
    Code:
     cd windows
    Code:
    dir /a
Also, some members are thinking in the direction of an infection.

Do you have Safe Boot turned on in BIOS?
And are you using Defender of a 3rd party AV?

Defender now has a built in Offline scanner you can run.
Just give the following in an Admin Command Prompt, let it run and reboot automatically back into Windows: the tutorial Windows Defender Offline Scan in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
    Code:
    PowerShell Start-MpWDOScan
    3. You will now see a message that You're about to be signed out to restart your PC in less than a minute to run the scan offline. (see screenshot below)

    4. When your PC restarts, you will see Windows Defender Offline loading. (see screenshot below)

    5. Windows Defender will now automatically perform a quick scan of your PC in the recovery environment. (see screenshots below)
    Note
You can click/tap on Cancel scan at anytime to stop the offline scan and restart back to Windows.

    6. When the offline scan has finished, your PC will automatically restart to Windows 10.

The screenshot I posted has all the requisite information that was asked for. It has written dir /a on the top.

At the bottom in the last line, I gave command cd windows, after which nothing happened.

I am using Kaspersky Internet Security 2016. I ran a thorough scan with it and found no viruses or infections.

I have safe boot turned on in my BIOS.

After cd /windows you needed to also type dir /a to list the directory. cd just brings you to the the Windows directory.
What Bill was looking for is, in your screenshot of your leftover fonts, the path shown in th address bar shows as > .Windows > .Fonts > there should not be a dot in front of Windows or Fonts:

thanks archz2 - yes, I only asked for a cd windows, Cliff might have thought I wanted a directory list, but that would have nbeen too big to fit on the screen

any way, some discussion on the screen ssot in post# 8 - shows .windows > .fonts

As I'm typing I see Cliff posted a screen of his explorer

The issue seems to be font related more than anything else

the cd Windows shows no dot (.) in front of the directory

There's a bit of cross talk, so I'll bow out for now

Dism & SFC or Repair Install would be my next suggestions - back to you Cliff

That dot seen in post number 8 was coming just before a space in the address bar when font trouble recurred.

So even if I have a folder like C:\Awesome Music, it would show up as C:\. Awesome Music

I have got these fonts from my friends and various websites like dafont.com and font squirrel. I have been using these fonts since the days I had windows xp . Since then my fonts backup folder keeps increasing and I copy them to my machines. I have this PC on which I am facing trouble as posted and my laptop is running windows 8.1 which also has these fonts but I haven't faced any such trouble on my laptop.
    I'm baccccck
    Uninstall all 3rd party fonts
    Reset Fonts to default
    Restart Explorer

    then I'd try SFC...
