    Max number of open files?


    Is there a setting in Win10 that limits the number of files a program can open, or that slows down a program with too many files open? I run a program that can, in some circumstances, open and read hundreds of files in parallel. In on very repeatable circumstance the program would read the files in about 30 seconds. After a clean reinstall of Windows it takes 2-4 times as long. Process Explorer show the I/O activity in spurts - about 20 seconds of nearly constant reading followed by pauses of anywhere between 5 and 30 seconds. The bursts of reading are much shorter than the pauses. I've been pursuing possible driver causes, but it could be as simple as parameter that was changed during the reinstall. Another aspect: the data read into storage. Memory allocation starts at about 2.4GB and ends at 5.2GB. I have 16BG so there is plenty of room, but could Windows be penalizing a storage hog?

    I have never heard of any version of Windows having any means of limiting open files. In practice the only limit is resource availability and that depends on many factors. Windows does not penalize storage hogs.

    I don't know if it would cause the lags you describe. But for simple NTFS partitions every time I get a new PC or reinstall I use the fsutil command line tool to do things like turn off setting the last access times for files(if you do not have any software that needs to know the last access of files it can speed things up and reduce thrashing.) Also fsutil can increase the file system memory buffers and do a few more tweaks.

    Any time you mess with these type of tweak though, it is a good idea to back up the registry with something dependable so you can undo a sour adjustment. I only toy with fsutil on simple/basic NTFS partitions. If there is anything exotic about a partition in the disk management I just leave it with the default settings.

    The not-so-easy solution was a re-clean-reinstall of Windows. I've no clue what the problem with the previous clean reinstall was, but all seems okay now.
