    You're welcome, Kari.

I found a whole bunch on PowerPoint 2013 too. I've watched three or four of them and they are great. I think they'll probably work for the public previews of Office 2016, since it seems there's not that much difference yet. Just search for Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 Tutorials.

I also realise I still need to work on my sound levels and could do with a better microphone setup.
Hmm - I've been struggling with sound on my Windows 8.1 laptop that I want to record with, as that's where I host my Windows 10 VM.

I've come to the conclusion that it's not the microphone - if I plug that into my old laptop running Windows 10, the sound captures pretty well (but Movie Maker crashes with Expression videos on that machine).

But if I plug the same mic into my newer laptop (currently with 8.1) the sound is a lot worse with that digital jingling noise you get when something has been processed too many times (which you can hear on my video from the other day).

I've been through all the settings I can find (I even recorded the settings I went through for a future video) and installed the latest Realtek driver from a couple of weeks ago... and it sounds better, but still not as good as I'd like.

Anyone got any ideas on how to improve speech recording/ microphone settings, without getting new hardware (which would be cheating!)?

David, have you tried the laptop's built-in microphone? I have been surprised to hear how much the recording quality improved when I just threw my failing mic to trash and started to use the laptop's own mic.

In my case I found the best settings (read = most pleasing for my ears) to be the recording level just under 50 out of 100, boost at +10 dB, and quality set to lowest possible which in my case means 2 channel 16 bit at 44,100 Hz.

I was really surprised how much better sound I get recorded now. With these settings I do not have to edit the sound level of the narration when editing the video, no need to increase or decrease it, it is (again, according to my own ears and listening experience) about as correct as it could be, with no distortions.

    Thanks Kari,

I've not really tried the built-in mic on my "problem" laptop. On my older one which has 10074 on it, the built-in mic isn't great though, and the external one is an improvement.

I've also been through all those settings - one possible issue is that the sample rate which Movie Maker uses to save audio narration is 48KHz rather than 44.1KHz, so I did wonder if using 44.1 was part of the issue. On my old laptop, 48KHz is slightly better (I did test it!), but I wonder if there is an intrinsic rate in the audio hardware which is different between laptops.

There is also a couple of noise reduction options within the Realtek drivers (I'll post a picture this evening) although I'm not sure if they add to the problem?

I subscribe to HTML Goodies and today's newsletter had "An Introduction to Open Source Software" so I clicked on it. Inside I found an article (which I read) and at the end of it were four links.

If you'd be interested in joining the site, here's the URL: http://www.htmlgoodies.com/beyond/re...4&rni=10626023

OK, now down to the Nitty Gritty . . . One of the links is for "20 Most Popular Open Source Software Ever" takes me to Tripwire Magazine where the listing is. Included in the list are Audacity, VLC, Gimp and Free Mind. Some or all of these may be of interest. Link to this is: 20 Most Popular Open Source Software Ever

So next I clicked on the link for "77 Open Source Replacements for Expensive Applications - Datamation". This is a listing alphabetized by subject matter; Audio Recording/Editing, Graphics/Drawing, Video Tools (of interest to us specifically) and many other subjects. The URL is: http://www.datamation.com/open-sourc...cations-1.html

What is so great about this is that although I picked out what we're interested in, there are many other subjects of interest that might be useable in our daily lives . . . personal accounting comes to mind for me.

Of course, the reminder that none of us needs: For downloading any of the apps, be sure to go to the "Official Site" for each one. As well, keep your eyes on installation so that no "nasties" get installed along with your app.

    Enjoy . . . I know I am going to!

Thanks @Wynona I appreciate the link. I was surprised that handbrake wasn't mentioned. Handbrake is an open source transcoding app for videos. It will do most encoding formats and does an excellent job. But, it is also very demanding on resources of the computer. You will find out if your computer is stable very quickly. I have used it a lot and have had excellent results.
