If you don't need your various Windows Apps to be connected to different email accounts, and if you like to sync everything automatically as I do, then yes, the MS Account is the obvious choice for us both and many other users like us.

I use the image/picture sign in method. It is a great deal easier than the password that I generated.
I boot the machine and I'm in!
Are you aware that you can auto-logon?

    Hi

I just want to comment that I do log in using my Microsoft account and my computer boots to the desktop with no password or password screen. It just says Hi Mike and logs in.

    In the Run box type...

    netplwiz

In the user accounts screen select the account and uncheck the box that says, "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer".

    Click Apply

Enter your password twice, I think.

Reboot your computer and it will boot to the desktop with out the password screen.

    That is simply not true.

It is totally, absolutely not possible to use an MS Account without a password, the password always being the one belonging to the email account connected to that MS Account.

A sign in with an MS Account always requires a password. It is of course possible to set Windows to sign in automatically without the need to type the password manually every time, but this does not mean that Windows signs in without a password. Password is there and is needed to sign in but as the user has set Windows to sign in automatically, the system enters it without user interaction. When Windows is locked or user for any reason signs out, the subsequent sign ins are manual and user has to enter to password.

However, if the computer has multiple user accounts, this is not recommended because the automatic sign in can only be used for one user account at any given time. If the User 1 is set to sign in automatically, Windows always enters this user's desktop when the computer is booted or restarted. For User 2 to sign in, you need to either sign out User 1 or use the Switch User feature to let User 2 sign in. In this example scenario User 2 always needs to sign in manually, and User 1 must also enter the password manually when signing back in.

    Kari,
This response reminds me of the story about the seven year old girl asking her mother where she came from.........
Mother sits the child down and spends thirty minutes explaining the facts of life. When asked if that answered her question she replied simply "I guess...... I was wondering because the new girl at school came from Cleveland"
    Relax.............
I log on without a password because it's set to auto-logon. Why it does that doesn't ever enter into my question.
I was wondering why people use a local account????
Your little tirade answered questions that I never asked with information that I already knew.
Man, you are spring loaded!!! Relax

BTW - I work with local accounts. I don't want anything synced.

to get the "full Windows Experience"
Sounds like an MS commercial but is not very practical for me.

I wanted to be sure that this is clarified because it is not true.

It's a huge difference signing in to Windows without a password which is only possible with a local account, and signing in using an MS Account which absolutely always needs and uses a password. Signing in to your MS Account automatically does not mean you sign in without a password. Even then you sign in with a password, it's just entered automatically for you.

I repeat: it is not possible to sign in to Windows using an MS Account without a password.

    "I repeat"
It's not necessary to repeat........... I saw it the first time and already knew it!
    I
I log-on without a password! I boot the machine, go pour a cup of coffee, back to the machine and it says "Welcome Roger"
How it gets there, I don't really care!
I logged on and never entered a password!
    Game over. End of discussion!
If you want to log-on without entering a password see Mike's post above.
    Have a nice day!

I don't know about Microsoft but I like the idea syncing OneDrive, Evernote, Kindle, and Calibre.
Can you do that with a local account?
Yes, each utility can be signed in separately.

User name............ I use my own name for my email so again "what's not to like"?
Your Response does not address the original comment.

You neglected to answer the main question... Avoiding a question discredits your position.

I don't really care how you run your system, you asked what others thought.......

No Roger, you don't log in to Windows without password and I think it is important to know for those who have not yet used Windows 8 and later and not signed in using an MS Account.

You log in with your MS Account password which you have set to be entered automatically. I really think it is necessary and important to understand the difference.

For home users, I don't see much of a difference between a local account and a Microsoft account, apart from some potential security issues.

However, for enterprise environments, Microsoft accounts are unacceptable. Most enterprises already have their own accounts using Active Directory or another directory service. They don't want that replaced or supplemented, and depending on the industry, using Microsoft accounts can result in severe auditing issues. Microsoft accounts are not controlled by the enterprise.

Some of this is being alleviated in Windows 10. Some services, like the Store, can be used using domain accounts. It does appear that enterprises wanting this will have to use Azure to some degree, though.
