With only one OS to worry about MS, has to be concerned with Windows 10 updates, improvements and questions from users; its a win win for them
Yup, but there will always be holdouts who don't want anything to do with Windows 10 because they've heard . . . you get the idea.

There will also be those who haven't a clue that Windows 8 exists, much less Windows 10. :) Believe it or not! Eventually, when I'm called on to help the seniors in our subdivision, I'll get about 1/4 of them to upgrade. At some point I'll have to tell folks that it's just not economical to work on a PC with Windows XP or 7 and then promise them that skipping Windows 8/8.1 is just the thing they should do. :) The ones whose computer has crashed and burned will be my easiest clients. I'll just have to help them set up their new system.

I am confused about the one year free upgrade.

Is it free as in upgrade for a year and it is yours to have forever?
Or is it free for one year and then you have to pay even though you already upgraded?

I see it the way it was with Windows 8. The price was only (if I remember correctly) $50.00 for a certain period of time. After that you had to pay the full price. So I'm guessing that if you get it within that time period it's yours to keep. But that's only a guess.

Ah, so this spells it out... it is continuously updated for the supported lifetime of the device. Reading between the lines that implies what could be a pretty short lifecycle based on accepted product lifecycles for consumer products . There is nothing to stop a 'Windows 11' appearing in a couple of years time to take advantage of new ideas/technology/hardware. W10 is then the old kid on the block. How it all plays out is speculation... your free W10 may not be transferable to a new PC bought in a couple of years time. A new PC in the future may be running W11 or W12 or something else entirely. All MS are saying is that W10 will be supported for the supported lifetime of the device. So we better ask the manufacturers of our PC's how long that is

All you have to do is the free upgrade to Windows 8.1 and you're good to go. :) And, since Windows 8 is between 7 and 8.1, I don't see why it wouldn't be eligible.

From what I understand it is free for the life of your machine. But it is so confusing and there are so many rumors that I will have to wait for a final response from MS to be sure. This build 10056 rocks.
