Help! Icons stay minimized and nothing runs after update to windows 10

My trusty old desktop running windows 7 updated to windows 10 on its on. It worked fine for all of one day. And during an update (i think) because it turned itself off, the icons stopped working. I cannot get anything to maximize-which essentially means i cannot run anything. The only thing that will come on is the search bar-and I can type into this-but that's it. I cannot run task manager-will show up as an icon, but I can't click on anything. Cannot run settings, file explorer, any browsers. Just nothing. I'm really upset about this because this was my reliable work horse and now its ruined. Please someone help.
    Thanks

No matter how trusty PC is you should make regular backups, to be prepared for inevitable hardware failures, faulty updates etc.
I would recommend doing clean windows 10 install, it solves most problems that people are having with upgrades. For most systems upgrade to 10 experience is smooth but there is always failures.
Also I would recommend to update your system specs or write specs of your PC in your post it may help to troubleshoot hardware incompatibility.

The tutorials here may be of help. For example:

I hope that you have access to a working PC and an 8 GB flash drive,
