Thanks, the truth is I've been dying to test it out for a while now! I joined the Windows Insider Program and downloaded Win10 a couple months ago but never got around installing it because I had some problems with Win8. A custom theme I installed was causing black screen at boot, I ended up reinstalling Win8 like 10 times back then (nothing would fix it, not even rebuilding BCD) but I finally found out what the problem was so if you ever plan on using custom themes let me know so I can give you a few must-knows. Here's what it looks like in case you're interested

    Regarding Win10 installation,
Why do you recommend creating a VHD? Wouldn't creating another partition be good enough? Win8 could have the BCD and the OS being in the same partition, isn't it the same with Win10?
Also, is Windows 10 known to have problems when installed from a thumb drive? (I try to avoid using CD/DVDs for anything)

I have multiple VHDs on a 150 GB partition for testing - when I'm done testing, I remove the VHD and change the boot config.
The one BIG advantage to installing to a VHD is that you don't need a new partition, the VHD can be created on C:\ - this is good for OEM machines that initialize the drive as MBR and then create four primary partitions.

You can do the same thing with a separate partition, which has the advantage of being able to be updated through Windows Update (VHD installed OS fails the update - it's a bug, but don't know if it will be fixed).

A dual boot uses one system partition (either a separate System Reserved, or on C:\ ). The only way I know of keeping the two OSes separate is to install on a 2nd drive while the original drive is physically disconnected fro the machine.

So, the choice is entirely up to you - I only offered my recommendation - there is no right or wrong here

If your system is booted using UEFI (not BIOS) then the thumbdrive must be formatted as FAT32, not NTFS. I've tried to help many people install Windows (not just Win10) who miss this point entirely and round we go - the install fails over and over.

Note: The Thumbdrive install media 'issue' only affects systems booting to UEFI

If you follow OPTION ONE in this tutorial, you can't go wrong
You might want to create a System Image of your Win8 install before installing Win10 - it's better and quicker than reinstalling

I see, thanks for all the info! So just to make sure, if I install Win10 on a VHD I won't be able to use Windows Update but I can still download the updates from the MS website and install the updates manually, right?

    You're more than welcome Jorge,

I should clarify that Windows Updates (WU) are fine on a VHD install.

Technical Preview Updates are the issue - when the next Preview Build is released for download (through WU) that is what fails. For instance going from 10.041 to 10.049 failed, all 'normal' Windows Updates succeeded (except one HW driver which turns out wasn't needed)

For the next TP release I have to create an ISO and clean install to a new VHD and everything is good.
There's a tutorial for ESDtoISO, but that might be getting ahead of the game.

Decide how you're going to test Win10 (if you're going to test Win10) and then open a new thread as issues crop up. This thread won't get much attention for install issues because it focuses on id3 tags.

The tutorials I posted and comments in them are the best good source, I think you're savvy enough to sort though the information.

Alright, thanks for that clarification. I'll check out the tutorials.
So, as my last comment for this thread, here is a link to Microsoft's feature suggestion site where you can vote for adding the capability of reading ID3v2.4 tags to Windows.

How can I view that page?
I click on the link and the page opens, but before I can read anything another page loads and obliterates it.

In fact, how do you even get to "Windows Suggestion Box"?

try refreshing or reloading the page. I think the same thing happened to me, but I just clicked the 3 votes button .

I just visited and there wasn't an issue this time.

The only way I can view the page is, to hit the browser "Stop" button before the other page starts to load.

    hmmmm.....
Pale Moon & MS page perhaps?

I turned off IE (Pgms & Feats) and use Spartna as my MS browser. But due to issues with that, I installed Pale Moon - and then uninstalled it. I finally ended up With Chrome - which seems to be the most stable browser running in Win10.

Many of the issues with Spartan and Pale Moon seem to be related to Flash, but I don't think that applies to what you're seeing (although it might - some of those fly-by drop down boxes might be flash). Javascript is more likely the culprit - why Chrome doesn't suffer that same issues beats me

See if you can find my feedback
ID3 v2.4 tags are not handled in Win10 (or previous versions) in the feedback app (I couldn't - lol
+me too it there if you still have difficulty getting to the uservoice page (or do both )

otherwise search the feedback app for ID3 v2.4 tags and +me too everything
