    Fraught with F8

Background: Recently I attempted a computer reset. which went wrong, so I got local professional support from someone I have trusted before.

Today I attempted to use F8 to safe boot the system to see if I can use it to solve a problem I have with uninstallation of a program. F8 was unavailable,so I used option 1 in the tutorial. This was apparently successful, but even after complete shut-down , and on reboot tapping the F8 key, the system boots straight to automatically logging me in to Windows without need of password.

    Can anyone advise please?.

With Windows 10 it is very difficult to use F8 especially if you have fast boot enabled. For this reason I use the methods shown in the tutorial below for safe mode.

I'll have a good dig in to that before any action. 10 seems to have a long learning curve. I shall also have to find more about fast boot. Maybe that's the reason for the difference in log in process before and after the machine's recent attention.

On my W7 upgraded to W10 HP laptop, I have to use shift + F8 now to get to safemode. When on W7 I just used F8.

Click Start, click the Power icon, hold down the shift key and click Restart.

2 ways to go to safe mode:

    1. If you can or already login..................
In the search box, type msconfig > Enter > click Boot tab at the top > under Boot options > check the box "Safe boot" > OK when done > restart computer.
*** If you use this option to go to safe mode, make sure you repeat the steps and this time UN-check the "Safe boot" box > OK. That will let you go back to normal mode when you restart the computer ****

    2. If you have not or cannot login....................
At the sign in screen, bottom right is the Power icon. Left click at it will give you Restart.
Press SHIFT key and Hold > click Restart > Troubleshoot > Advanced Settings ( or Advanced options ) > Startup Settings > right side, click the Restart button > next screen will give you Safe Mode selections > use the number keys to select.
