    Thanks MrWhoppee

Unfortunately it's a totally black screen, right from power up. No sign of life at all (fan spins, and I guess the SSD powers up, but I don't know if it boots.)

Does this mean a hardware issue? I guess it's an expensive one. The toshiba forum link suggestion didn't work either

Yes, unfortunately it looks like hardware. Since the projector doesn't work either (assuming you have tried FN+F5 to switch from lcd to external), it appears that the video adapter has failed. It's rare, but it does happen.

Sigh, ok thank you. Is the video adapter replaceable, or do I have a big issue now?

Sounds like a new MB, which is not worth the cost, as a replacement laptop would be a better use of the money.

Sorry about this. If you have a reputable repair service nearby, you could have them verify the diagnosis. They also may have a used laptop that one of their customers traded in for a newer model. They would have refurbished the old one, and might have it for sale cheap. Never hurts to ask.

I've been looking for a reason to upgrade anyhow. This Toshiba has served me well for several years. My preference is to extract as much value as I can from my tech, and I certainly will ask a place I know and trust, but if it's the end of the road, I am happy to buy something which will serve me for another few years to come

Do let us know the results if you have it checked out by a tech. If you're satisfied, please go ahead and mark the thread as solved. Cheers!

Ok - finally had a chance to have this looked at by a techie. Indeed your suppositions were correct and they have confirmed it's a graphics chip issue. I've been given options to replace the chip or the motherboard. Both are uneconomical given the age of the laptop.

Now time for a replacement. Can anyone recommend a good web site to help me select - or at least narrow down - my options from the hundreds of options out there? One that assesses UK options would be ideal

Sorry, but I'm on the other side of the pond, so wouldn't be much help in that department.
