I'm bumping this thread because this just happened to a friend of mine. It's a bit more complex then that though.

He was running Windows 7 and a window popped up not matching the theme of windows 7 saying "Windows 10 is now ready to install. Would you like to install now or be notified at a later time?" He selected to be notified at 3PM. Right behind that was a "Your computer has important updates. Restart to install now" window. He restarts the computer and Windows 10 immediately installed instead of waiting.

Now his computer starts up with the Windows 10 theme, but clicking "I'm not xyz" the "Show password" icon, or the "Next" button does nothing. A second click turns the cursor into a loading wheel, and eventually (or after a third click) you get the "white tinted not responding" filter over the whole screen, then the computer goes black causing you to manually turn it off.

He's on the line with Microsoft support so hopefully he can get this fixed. I'm suspecting he may need to format the HDD and re-install 7 though.

    **UPDATE**

This is makes no (curse words) sense... but unplugging the router fixed it... I don't know how but after several failed restarts, terminating the internet connection in his house fixed it.

    Microsoft, please fix.

    **UPDATE 2**
Typing these as they happen because, woo-hoo, more issues.

Task manager doesn't refresh at all and the WiFi adapter doesn't work. Trying to update the wifi's drivers via USB just ends up freezing too. This looks an awful lot like the wifi drivers issues Yosemite had on Mac.

Friend is restarting computer... stuck in restart cycle at this time.

"Your PC has confronted an error and needs to restart. Collecting data..."
Uhuh.. so, it's restarting during a restart because it encountered a problem restarting.

Computer restarted. Didn't bother updating anything. Left it run idle, and then tried opening Steam. Desktop tinted white and taskbar turned solid white. "Windows 10 has stopped responding" showed up twice after clicking "close program." Final verdict of today is he's gonna have the friend who helped him build it come by later and either try and fix it himself or just format it and re-install 7.

I'd be more forgiving if this was just a failed update on his computer, but he clicked "Remind me later" and was prompted to immediately restart anyways and windows 10 forced installed on his computer. I found a similar article here: MS forced install to Windows 8.1 after I click on Remind me later. - Microsoft Community

I know I'm gonna update to Windows 10 eventually, but this just raises red flags all over and leaves me very cautious of it.

This is a problem. I got my machine going by booting with a bootable win 10 installation disc. It's working now, I don't know how long. I hope this helps.

This would probably be helpful if I were able to interface with my PC using my mouse, and keyboard. Snice my mouse and keyboard are not recognized by windows 10, this information isn't very helpful to me.

Hi Sodan86. I thought that would be a problem too , since my keyboard & mouse didn't work. When I booted with the installation disc my keyboard & mouse started working. Give it a try.

Thank you for posting this, in detail!! Gave me the starting point I needed to fully fix the issues with the upgrade to Windows 10.

For those reading this now, if you have a way to do so, download [or flash] your WiFi adapter drivers [if they are firmware components], or have the install disc ready for any USB WiFi adapter you are using. Start by following the above instructions and TURN OFF the WiFi on your computer to finish the install of Windows 10. If you are stalled out anywhere around the "log in" screen, reboot your machine after disabling WiFi. Then, follow these steps:

    - Enter Password and press 'Next' on the install log in screen for Windows 10.

    - Bypass the 'Setup Internet Connection' by clicking the 'Skip this Step' near the bottom left of the screen.

    - Follow the prompts to configure your "home screen" and finish the install of the OS to your system.

    - Once the OS installs and your system loads, follow whatever paths are presented to log in.

At this point, you will have to start the process of install ALL third party drivers. That's right, EVERY SINGLE driver for a third party [USB, PCIe, etc.] component needs to be reinstalled after the OS update. WiFi adapter, WiFi card, sound card, and Graphics cards; any drivers for these components were overwritten by Windows when upgrading to 10. Microsoft decided that if it was not on the motherboard and firmware, it was not to be saved/used. For those that might be keeping score, that means that the fundamental flaw of Windows 8.x was maintained: the "desktop" version of Windows 10 is actually a backward-port from the framework OS that is initially [and functionally] designed to operate on laptops, tablets, and any other "mobile" device that will accommodate the OS. For someone like me, who uses custom-built desktops, that doesn't work well... This is a sad issue to face, but thankfully this process should fix everything for you. Once you reinstall your WiFi drivers, you should be able to connect to the internet. [NOTE: I am using custom-built desktops, with USB WiFi-adapters, so I would be curious to know of the above process does, in fact, work on a laptop/firmware driver "update" after the Windows 10 update.]

I hope, between the OP I reference, and my follow up, fewer people will bang their heads on their desks when the Windows 10 update stalls out on their end.

    Cheers!

Bumping this. I'm stuck on the time/date screen too. Win 10 seemed to install correctly, but wasn't detecting all 3 of my monitors (2 monitors and a cintiq). I restarted and now it detects all monitors, but the mouse and keyboard aren't functional. While the computer is booting up, I can hit del to go into bios (asus mobo) and the mouse/keyboard work fine there! When you exit bios and start Win 10 they stop doing anything though. I should have waited a month or two before moving to Win 10 so more bugs would be worked out.... ugh.
