I've never understood why you'd want to trust software to move your data over, when no one (or not app) will know where you keep your data better than you. I wouldn't want a wizard guessing at my file locations when I know exactly where I keep anything and everything important. Does Easy Transfer do something more than this.
If you're just migrating data files then I would agree, using Easy Transfer gains little. But when you want to migrate apps, where stuff is stored in pieces all over the place, including registry files, you really need an app that can hunt all of those down, package them, and copy them for you. Migrating apps is the key value I see to using the third-party apps.

Totally agree ! It's been so dang long since MS and other market forces put those out of business, I can't even remeber the one I used years ago. Seems to me I lost the thread somewhere during Windows 95. Will have to have a catch up look at LapLink.

Availability of something like that would make a born again clean install freak out of me.

    Why do so much work

Just get a copy of PCmover from Laplink. It supports transferring apps, data, and settings to Windows 10 and is recommended by Microsoft. They are offering a free limited version on at Microsoft at Free data transfer

You can still run Windows Easy Transfer in Windows 10. All you have to do is to copy two directories from your Windows 7/Windows 8: \Windows\system32\migration and \Windows\system32\migwiz to your destination system. Place them anywhere outside Windows hierarchy. Run migwiz\migwiz.exe

Tested on my own machine doing W7->W10 and W10->W10

Windows Easy Transfer will not return to Windows 10. See this article Microsoft Provides Free Copy of PCmover Express to Aid File Transfers - IGN.

I know there are numerous "good" reasons why the Easy Transfer tool was done away with by Microsoft, and I am not here to debate those reasons or re-hash discussions on these reasons. What I want to know is the following:

    • Is the tool likely to make a return to 10 -- in any simple and easy-to-use form -- before 10 hits RTM?
    • Is there a simpler process than all of the sysprep/scripting solutions I have seen in my searches of this forum? Those seem directed at the technical folks who constantly wipe and install different versions of 10 while still wanting access to the same basic profiles.
    • Is there a free tool or nominally inexpensive tool that y'all have seen sucess with when trying to migrate user profiles (settings, files, list of installed programs) from Windows 7 computers to Windows 10?

There must be a simple way to do this if Microsoft wants 10 to be the success that 7 was and continues to be. Uploading everything to OneDrive is just not a solution for everyone, mainly grandparents and people with terrible ISPs that think DSL is fast enough for their customers.

That free version is PCMover Express -- and it does NOT transfer applications. To do that, you need PC Mover Pro -- I know because I tried it, confirmed it does not transfer apps, contacted Laplink -- and was told about PC Mover Pro -- which is NOT free.

This was written back in March, long before folks started using the Win10 Upgrade tool -- which is HOW MS wants folks to transfer stuff from Win7/8/8.1 to Win10.

Sure, but it is not in Windows 10

LapLink has PCMover, which also allows you to migrate apps from one PC to another ... it's just that the question was about Windows Easy Transfer.

True, my mistake, although I did say "a limited" version. The PRO version is $19.95 and it does transfer applications.

You can still use WET on Windows 10 but it requires a Windows 7 PC to create the installation files.

    From a Windows 7 PC

    1. Click the Start button and type "easy", Launch/Open Windows Easy Transfer
    2. Welcome to Windows Easy Transfer - select "Next"
    3. Select "An External hard disk or USB flash drive"
    4. Select "This is my new computer" and then click "No"
    5. Select "I need to install it now"
    6. Select either External or USB

This will save the Windows Easy Transfer application to an external source so you can either Run it from a Network shared location or using an external hard drive or USB flash drive.

I've confirmed that this works on Windows 10, both ways (exporting profiles/shared files and importing profiles/shared files).

There is answer, no. There is no longer a built-in Windows Easy Transfer for Windows 10. Some third-party software may can do that.
