    Once installed - all desktop shortcuts gone - have a clean slate

    I tried to install windows 10 - it seemed to work but then all my desktop shortcuts were gone and I couldn't access anything - unless I searched one by one each file....what have I done wrong and why is everything gone ?? I need all my information and couldn't access so I went back to Windows 7

    We can't tell you what went wrong until we know exactly how you installed Windows 10.

    Try to click on the empty desktop and then create a file on here , all those will be appear on desktop.

When installing programs most place their shortscuts in the Public folder instead of placing them in the user folder. What am i doing wrong? I never had this problem with Windows 8.
I opted to hide the desktop icons, via a right-click on the desktop but now I can't un-hide them - right-clicking on the desktop has no effect at all..!!? (???) duh.. :o
Does anyone know how to do this? With Internet Explorer you simply dragged the site icon in the title bar to the desktop, but I can't seem to do this with Edge.:(
