    Ah, I misread post# 1.
Search from the desktop? Do you mean the search in File Explorer? If that is the case, try michaelrule4's suggestion - rebuild the index. There was also an issue in Win7, I think, that if Libraries (related to the index) are removed, search fails to work - does nothing. Try Restore default Libraries (in the navigation pane of File Explorer, right click on Libraries - select option).

By the way .... what is this now?
Windows - MS Search in cCleaner has been there as long as I can remember, at least since I moved to Win8.1 (but memory being what it is ... ). It's the search cache. You can right click on any of the categories to see the files and investigate if warranted, or de-select that category and analyze again if you do NOT want to clean up the files.

edit: I read post#1 again and saw button - so that takes me back to Cortana (taskbar search button).
    I'm very confused
See if you can clear it up for me by right clicking on the taskbar and see what Search option is set - try selecting Show search box - that will help me understand what search isn't working and maybe .... maybe get me on the correct path to offer some meaningful feedback. You also have to de-select taskbar properties -> Taskbar tab -> Use small taskbar buttons to see the search box !

Never mind - this doesn't work - I cannot get the search box to display on the taskbar, not matter where I set it (taskbar context menu: search, or taskbar properties -> Toolbars tab ->Search on the taskbar [ options dropdown list ]

If you want a search icon on the desktop (a shorctut to the Modern search, navigate to
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
and copy the search shortcut to your desktop.

There are too many searches at the moment and they're all in flux.

Hi Bill. It is search only, with cortana disabled.

About the ccleaner, I am wondering that how it can clean that volume of search when search is not working at all.

    Right click on taskbar ....

Yes, I can use any of the searches. As I cannot use any search at all. I am just wondering why the native thing is not working. Nothing else.

Hi Michael. Thanks a great lot for this post. I have done what you suggested.

    Search is not working.-1.jpg

When done, I got this .....

    Search is not working.-2.jpg

I clicked OK. Apparently nothing happened. So I closed the control panel. Now I should wait? How much it may take?

Thanks again, for understanding me at least. I did not think that my post was not that dumb that people will be confused. Bu that happened.

It's me Archie, not you. I think Win10 testing has fried my brain!

The search cache gets filled as the gatherer crawls the system and updates the index.

How long do you wait for the rebuild to finish. It depends on the number of locations indexed. It's usually fairly fast - 10-15 minutes.
If you look back at indexing options in Control Panel, you'll know when it's done

    Search is not working.-indexcomplete.png

The rest - I'll just say that I've submitted feedback about search not working 'correctly' on 9926 and 10041 releases. Each machine and environment is different. For some members search works fine - not me, and not as expected (it should search regardless of Cortana settings or network connection, or MS account ... it should search).

I just use the File Explorer search box - or Command Prompt to find things. I have no other choice ... yet.

Yes, indexing complete. But still which I click on the search button I only get the mouse hover effect on the button. I guess my bad luck.

It is not anything very essential, but still it would be good it it would have been worked.

Ok Archie, here's the insane part! After reading your post# 15, I decided to give Search another go.

Right clicked taskbar, pick Search, enabled Show search icon
I hovered over the magnifying glass on the taskbar to get a first hand look at what you described. Then I clicked the icon and ... and
    ... it worked!

Not only did the search pane appear, but it searched and actually found what I wanted (msconfig is my standard search item).

I did not restart and I also checked to see if WU gave me something behind the scenes (it did not).
I am using a local account.

    So what happened?
I toggled the Search box on (taskbar search pick),
I changed the taskbar to NOT use small icons (the search box did NOT appear, only the icon was displayed)
I toggled the search icon on (taskbar properties -> toolbars tab - > Search on the taskbar -> icon)

Nothing worked at that point, so I reverted to the way I was operating my machine

I changed the taskbar to use small icons (the search icon was still displayed)
I disabled search icon on (taskbar properties -> toolbars tab - > Search on the taskbar -> disabled)

Then I read post# 15 and (see notes at top).

Something isn't sticking and the settings need to be 'awakened' - at least on my machine.

Play around with the display search settings and see if any one particular set works for you. No guarantee that it will be retained after a restart.

    Best of luck, my friend.

    Hi Michale.

Though a single go did not help me, but a few rebuilds and restarts made everything back to normal. Search is working again!!!

    Great help, mate!

Thanks a lot for your valuable assistance. I am marking this thread as solved, cheers.
