How do i extract wim files from an image backup of windows 10 ?

IF I have a backup image of all my files from Windows 10 on
a DVD disk backup, and I wish to extract (using 7-zip) those files to original
FOLDER destinations, but I have already re-installed a clean install of Windows 10
program, how do I extract the files from Office 10 to original destination
files without copying all the files on the image overtop of the new Windows
10 install? Do I have to sort through all the WIM files, and extract and copy
them seperately to the original folders? Same for pictures, etc. Thanks for
your help. Asking just in case there's was a virus loaded into my system image,
etc., settings. Thanks for any help.

what did you use for a backup program???

Normally you would extract the .wim files to the same temp folder

once all .wims files are extracted the temp folder should contain your full system backup

then copy files from backup temp folder - to host folders..

Macrium Reflect Free, or even Windows own (IMO inferior) tool have capability to extracting data selectively from image backups.

OK for data but no good for programs that generally require registry edits.

It is doable to extract programs and manually make regedit changes etc, but simply easier to reinstall.

You should never need to mess around with wim files to do what you need.

I used a system image backed-up on Windows 10 using a DVD disk. I successfully opened the backup WIM files using 7-Zip extraction program, and can see all the WIM files. I can open each WIM folder to see what each contains. I'm afraid if I just restore them to my clean install of Windows 10, I'll copy a virus into the system again because the settings will also transfer. What I would like to do is just isolate the back up files and transfer them by copying them to new folder destinations in the appropriate applications. I guess I'll have to do them all manually. Does this sound right? Thanks for the help.

you would create a folder "TEMP"
extract all the wim files to C:\TEMP

copy the files you need from C:\temp to there proper host folders..

    Delete C:\TEMP
