I just right click the Start Button, for quick access to system tools like control panel, file explorer.

I have most of that either pinned or in the System Quick Bar there as well as having a repeat for explorer and any browsers in order to be able to open multiples since the taskbar pinned item is always taken on the first shot when you may need a second window open.

One thing MS did lately was now see the option to replace the Command prompt with the Windows PowerShell in the Start button's right click menu. Rather then that you would otherwise see it pinned to the Start itself. Otherwise open run and then type cmd.exe and then right click to get the admin permission going?

That can pinned as well but first a need for the short cut to see that made elevated for the extra step and soon you run out of space on the taskbar for pinned items you want in view. Clicking the small arrows for things that go beyond brings you back to another Start menu only in a different place as an extended jump list. There can be a downside there too.

I have 8 things pinned to my taskbar, and 30 or so Tiles on my Start Screen. Anything else I just use search. If you hold the shift key down, and launch a program from your taskbar, it will open a second instance. Or third instance etc.

That's if... being a two hand operation while with a fast single click for each showing in the Quick bars with the Quick Launch bar itself mostly open to view I work much faster!

You see this works out better for the typical "constantly busy doing something" approach! As you can see I have a few more then just 8 items pinned actually 15 on the main and even several on VMs at times.

Stardock's Start10 sees the new Modern style menu with or without the tile section entirely unless you want to see the old 7 style Start menu in use! For the $4.99 tag to set up the customer account and receive regular updates I think was a fast and easy way to rid the desktops and a few VMs not all but a few of the Metro tiles entirely!

By right clicking to resize choosing "Small" for each tile and stacking them up in single file you can narrow the new menu a bit as well as keep several together in each group. But dragging each almost on top of the previous tends to keep them together for a certain number like a having a dozen in pairs side by side stacking each pair under the previous to save space but still ends up seeing several categories unless you limit how many items are pinned by unpinning items you never use to start with!

That was how I did it before getting Start10 on!

I tried with Start10 and resizing the tiles but it's still the same problem. It's not a HUGE deal but I hope they give the option in the future to remove the dividers altogether. The ironic thing is that, from what I understand, the issue doesn't exist on Windows Phones.

Please don't take offense, but it looks cluttered to me. It's what ever works for you though. People adapt their systems to suit their needs. Nothing wrong with that. I'm retired so I have simple needs as far as what I do with my PC. Changes I'd like to see are being able to use tablet mode when you have more than one screen in use. And to be able to span your Start Screen across multiple monitors. Natively in Windows without the need for third party programs. Oh and better options for arranging tiles on the Start Screen. Ditch the dead space and dividers altogether.

Its all about different strokes for different folks,,, I like the option to be able to separate between tiles ,,that way I can keep like/similar software together in each different section ... so if they do fix your issue ,then I wont like it that way ,and then I will go to a windows forum and complain or inquire as to a fix ... so there is no happy crowd

I talked about having the OPTION to remove the dividers. I don't care if they come as default but they should at least let you change it under the start configuration. That way, everybody is happy :)

I also like to separate my tiles in groups. It's the default mandated "space" between the groups that pisses me off. If you make a group 2 small tiles wide, it reserves a big space to the side for some reason?

When having the tiles in the default menu the ability to shrink them down and narrow the tile section also helped free up a lot of desktop realestate without any question. The dividers serve the purpose of seeing numerous tiles categorized to be organized. With the revision now being seen however you can no longer narrow the tile down any even with all tiles going vertically in a single row regardless of the dividers. MS still wants that space taken up due to how the main portion of the main menu is now alphabeticalized.

As for the Start10 app there you have three menu options not just the one with tiles but also the one without any! That one resolves the amount of space being taken up. And as for the volume of things I frequently examine any number of apps to evaluate as well as duplicate shortcuts for ready on the go access at any time often busy with multitasking rather then just having a shiny face for the desktop! The main here is a "Work Horse" not Glamourized pc.
