You can still manually upgrade drivers in Win 10.
Can you explain this in detail?
    It doesn't seem that way.

I haven't had a problems with Windows 10 not allowing me to install my own drivers. When I want to install updated drivers for a device I'll go to the manufacturers site and check for updates. If I find any I'll download them and follow the manufacturers instructions to install them. What drivers are you having a problem with? Maybe we can help.

There seems to be some confusion here. This is not about problems installing drivers, this is about why Windows10 shows starting in Selective Mode when checking using the msconfig command. Updating drivers is not the problem, all the drivers I loaded or updated did so just fine. What I was trying to address was why Windows10 runs in Selective Mode and why can't it run in Normal Mode without reverting back to Selective Mode. The answer turned out to be how Microsoft recognizes, verifies, and or approves system drivers for use in Windows10. When the system driver is too new or at a version level higher than what Microsoft has determined is the best system driver to use, and has not yet been vetted by Microsoft and the corresponding Windows10 update has not been loaded, Windows10 switches to Selective Mode. Running in Selective Mode is not a problem, most computers from HP, Lenovo, Dell and the like are more than likely running in Selective Mode. So if you upgrade a system driver whether manually or through an automated process, other than a Windows10 update, and the system driver is the latest and greatest, or at a version level different than what Microsoft has determined is best, chances are your computer may switch modes and run in Selective Mode.

To MSNY: Yes you can upgrade drivers manually in Windows10. For that matter, you can upgrade drivers manually in every version of Windows.

To Winuser: If you have loaded the latest system driver, run the msconfig command and you will see what I am talking about. Chances are Windows10 will start in Selective Mode. I just re-imaged my computer and loaded Windows10 Pro 64-bit, in doing so I noticed the startup mode when I checked and began to ask why. Loading drivers from the manufacture website is perfectly fine and Windows10 runs perfectly well in Selective Mode.

Hopefully this clears up some of the confusion, if not please post your question. If your question is referring to something different I may answer in another post with the appropriate title.

    I have 2 older systems that I built circa 2007 and 2010.
Manufacturers drivers are mostly out of date, some being for win 7 or 8 at best.

Everything works fine in windows 10, but had heck of a time installing on both systems.

My understanding has been that if you manually installed a graphics driver for instance, Windows 10
would always overwrite it automatically if it felt it wasn't correct.

    Am I wrong?

I manually install all drivers whenever a new one comes out. Have always manually installed graphic drivers to insure I am using the latest for my video card. Windows has never tried to override as yet.

It depends upon the driver, and if Windows had what it thinks are better drivers.

I have done many driver updates and program installs, and normal startup appears all the time for me.

Hi, I have this same issue with my MS Surface Pro 4 after updating it with the Aug Anniversary Update. Prior to that my wife's Dell Laptop had this same issue. I have been going crazy trying to fix it to Normal Startup. I really do not want to do clean re-install of Win 10. My wife's laptop was originally a Win 7 machine and I took advantage of the free upgrade to Win 10 in July. I sometimes had issues when Windows Update would run updates would fail to install. I had fixed this issue in the past doing a clean boot which is a selective startup. I even experienced updates failing on my Win 7 Desktop and have to do a clean boot to get them to install.

Anyway, I am puzzled why Surface Pro 4 is stuck in Selective Startup. You mentioned that you tested it by using a 3rd party AV (Norton). I had many issues with Norton on my Win 10 machines so I switched to BitDefender for AV and Internet Security. So I am thinking that you may not be correct when it comes to not using MS Defender. I am thinking my issue could be that BitDefender is causing my issue with my Surface Pro 4. I am not sure but suspect it is the cause. As for the difference between Selective Startup and Normal I experience very slow startup on my wife's laptop ever since it got stuck in Selective Startup. BitDefender takes a long time to load on the task bar, but occurred after I uninstalled it to see if that would correct this issue. So after reinstalling BitDefender it loads last.

I hate doing a Reset or Clean Install because that is more work on my part because I will have to re-install software and apps that did not originally come with the machine. Just additional pain. I am hoping there is way to fix this by doing a simple command in Command prompt or Registry Editor.
