Windows 10 views back to front

    Howdy,
I have a Windows 10 laptop that has been working fine since being upgraded from Win7 about 6 months ago.
I switched it on yesterday, no problems encountered, until I opened File Explorer (old Windows Explorer) and found the window/view had 'mirror imaged' – the top menu options (file/home/share/view) had switched to the right side of the window, and the 'close' and minimise buttons had switched to the left side. The Navigation/file view is also reversed.

I opened Control Panel, same thing, everything reversed. See attachements.
    This was a strange experience!

I downloaded the latest Windows updates thinking it may have been a bug, but no change.
I also noticed that when I right click a WINRAR zip file, the first 3 or 4 options in the pop-up are written in Arabic, along with the typical English options underneath.
Has anybody seen this before or can advise a fix?
    Any help appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Rod

Hello rodf Welcome to the Ten Forums!

I could tell you what I might do or someone else would do namely wipe the entire drive and start all over fresh to eliminate any concerns over malware. I do have to suspect that but also have to advise looking to see any new language pack or other programs were just installed lately. A bug laced app if not a language pack would be a thought in that regard.

The next option of course is booting into the F8 Boot options for the Recovery/Repair tools and trying to get the System Restore feature running knowing it would be a task while still in Windows to see a recent still old enough restore point selected to go back far enough before the hidden change was made. While you see it now you still don't know just when whatever struck?!

Something went sideways on you for sure seeing that. The Reset This PC option is also one of the options under Recovery that will see a fresh copy of 10 put on however while you may even want to consider an Upgrade to Repair or Clean Install left open for the two last resort options in order to get this cleaned up. I would still opt for the System Restore point first however to get things rolled back if possible.

Open Settings, Time and Language, Region and Language. Make sure it's set to the right country.

Also check to see if there area any left to right and right to left display selections for your language.

Just found this also: File Explorer Menus and Layout Reversed, Becoming Right-to-Left - The Winhelponline Blog

WinRar was the cause. Uninstalled it and the display corrected itself.

Ztrucker I am thinking that they may have downloaded a torrent of the program that they are using to look at Rar's, instead of a trusted version from majorgeeks.com

7-zip is the better choice for the OP. 7-zip.org. Get rid of that other software. The other is Peazip, which can be downloaded from peazip.org

Also run a full scan from the instructions in the Malware forum for majorgeeks.com that is titled "Read me first".

Looks like you can just delete a few files and restart too,

I run the trial version of Winrar here and never once on any build have run into anything like this. So depending on just where you download from that seems to be where the problem originates. Majorgeeks while a totally safe site is a bit outdated as far as the apps they see there. Cnet Download or Softpedia on the other hand are kept updated. Softpedia News is something many are familiar with already.

The latest version where you wouldn't have to worry about any reverse view problems is found at WinRAR (64-bit) - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com

This isn't strlctly a Winrar or 10 problem either since several posts about this problem being seen in previous versions many with 7 have been run into.

Night Hawk the software is not out of date, unless it is no longer supported.

Tim has not been regularly updating the database info, but the downloads from the author sites are the latest.

Never download from CNet, because they do tend to embed the software in installers that can hit you with drive bys.

Downloaded numerous time from cnet without issues. In fact to replace the 371 I just downloaded the latest 531 version

This is a trial version of WinRAR archiver. Anyone may use it during a test period of 40 days.
That was the top line of the license agreement and nothing else like Yahoo toolbars. McAFail trials, etc. are found in the downloads there. Other sites on the other hand are often found laced with unwanted options added in while the Winrar downloads have generally been found clean over the years. The best place where you know 100% for sure no bugs are laced in is always direct from teh software's home site itself! WinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files

Just be careful you don't hit the wrong download link there however as you will notice the Arabic links for the 32bit and 64bit are right next to the American links followed immediately after by the ...

    WinRAR and RAR 5.31 release

    REMOVED DIRECT DOWNLOAD LINKS
But that still wouldn't explain the Arabic being found in an explorer window even when it opened up in a reverse view suggesting something else besides Winrar is at fault unless the wrong download link was hit?

Well from the look at the Winrar home site you can see how easily someone might have hit the wrong download link since they have everything jammed up in a bunch! You have to remove all traces as well as using the uninstall option to avoid any repeats. During the installation you will also note the integration options in check boxes for context and other menu items as far as File Explorer is concerned.
