I use good old Windows Media Player to create playlists of the tracks I want in the order I want. Isn't that what the OP wants?

I get a lot of questions like that. People don't realize that they are not arraigning songs but files that are shown in some order device you are using may arrange them in different order. In some places you can see them in alphabetical order, some by date/time, some in any other order.
It's not a magnetic tape or recorded disk.

    Hi there

Not sure if WMP is any good these days --especially if playing tracks stored on a Linux server with long file names -- C'mon Windows please fix that issue !!!!

But as Count Mike says - the music tracks are FILES so have in the file name your sort key -- e.g Album name track nr.

The two apps I listed can do this very fast so you don't have to spend a long time doing it yourself and can recurse several directories in one go making job really easy.

    Cheers

Due to the way that Files are stored on a USB Stick - They are always stored in the order they are loaded onto the Stick, dependent on the application used to read the stick, the application may be able to read and display in other orders.

Not all applications can do this so, to be sure you need a specialist tool

Take a look at this free tool http://www.anerty.net/software/file/DriveSort/ which allows you to create your own order or alphabetical list which is readable correctly Full instructions are supplied on the download page - I use it for sorting my 64GB sticks for the Car and is the only Application I know that works for that usage

You know how to double click on your mp3 an pull up the song. I changed view at top left, then I named all the groups the same. Like left click on song, right click on same sont, name song by group. I name all songs by third day, when you name the second song third day, a little box will pop up asking if u want to name it third day 2, click yes, next one u name third day, box will pop up, do u want to name third day 3, click yes, so much easier, computer keeps up with numbers for u. The songs won't re figure, Until u close the screen to mp3,

    I always do this by adding a three digit number in front of each song;

    001
    002
    003
    245
    246
    247
    982
    983

You get the idea. I've been doing this for years and it always works.
I Been doing this, so when i get to the high numbers dont put a zero in front of it just leave it as is thanks

when I put songs in a folder on my desk top and then transfer to USB, they don't play in the order I add them. I put numbers in front of them but it still seem to be not working. Do I need a certain app for this to work
    Thanks

The songs might be playing in tag order not song title order.

Tags can be changed, as can the title.

If you have 2 songs named:

    164 Elvis Presley - Mystery Train.mp3
    11 Frank Sinatra - The Coffee Song.mp3

Elvis may play before Frank despite the lower track number for Frank. That's because E comes before F in the English alphabet.

In some cases, your technique in copying from a hard drive to a USB stick can make a difference, at least on a car player. I try to copy the entire list of songs at one time, using a right click, while having the cursor locked onto the first song in the folder as I drag. Car mp3 playback units can be quite particular.
