Got Rid of all files in %temp% and now my computer is playing up.

Well i read somthing that hinted that deleting files in %temp% was a good way to increase FPS in a game i was playing, after further research it seemed that it was safe to delete all the files which i did. Now the problem occoured today when i came onto my desktop around 60% of my desktop icons had lost there image and were just white many of which had stopped working as shortcuts, Another thing i noticed was that i could not open any downloads to install them, I tried to reinstall skype as it kept playing up possibly because of deleting %temp% files however once i had downloaded it i could not open the file to install, i downloaded some more things and again i couldnt open any of them however i could open downloads that i had downloaded previous to deleting %temp% files. Is this just my computer playing up for no reason or because i got rid of all files in %temp% also sorry if this is the wrong place to post.

Only right click on hard drive icon, select properties and click on Disk Cleanup. Cleaning up files will not increase FPS in your game.

Try a system restore to a prior date.

Could deleting %temp% files do harm to my computer though?

They should be safe to delete, as they are only temp files. As mentioned, it shouldn't have anything to do with your in-game performance. What do you mean by "playing up"?

Did you delete all of the files inside the %temp% directory, or did you just delete the entire %temp% directory. It sounds like permissions error. I'm guessing that the Temp directory has been changed so that programs cannot create any files in the Temp Dir. That would make sense because when you install a program, it wants to place Temporary files on to the Temp Directory and if they don't have permission, the install will fail.

    Try this:

    • Type WinKey-R (opens the Run Command Window)
    • Type %TEMP% and hit return, this should open the TEMP folder
    • From there, go up one level in the Explorer. This should be C:\Users\chacob40\AppData\Local\
    • Right-Click the Temp folder and select Properties
    • Select the "Security" tab
    • You should see that "System", Administrators and your personal user account have full permissions to the Temp Folder. If not, add each of those users and give them Full Access.

You might want to reboot after doing this

Let us know if it helps.

And don't delete files to add FPS to games, it won't do anything. Likely someone was messing with you and you are now paying the piper.
