How do I initiate a search in W10?

I just upgraded to W10 from W8.1. How do I start a search (say for a text file containing the word <butter>)? In W8.1 I would press the Windows start button and the letter "f" (for Find).

I have a dozen questions like this; is there a file I can consult that lists answers to common ones? Thanks. ...wdc

Hello wdc Welcome to the Ten Forums!

The new search option available in 10 would be Cortana. By default that comes enabled in 10 and is able to search you local drives as well as the web. The old Search however is still present but requires a right click on the Start button as that is no longer seen near the bottom of the new Start menu. You will find that as well as the Control Panel, Run command line, Command prompt and Command prompt(admin) as well as other items in the right click menu itself.

You will even find the shutdown options there as well.

    ok, thanks.
Say I want to find files containing the word <butter>. Where do I enter <butter> after I right click the Windows icon at left of the Task bar?

I think you will want to review the guide for how to enable Cortana which will take you through each step. The drop down menu has the familiar text line at the bottom as you would have seen the search on the Windows 7 Start menu.

First however since Cortana is bit more involved you will want to get familiar with the various settings that include on/off switches. Cortana - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

That will make it much easier for you to navigate! :)

I assume you want to search for text, contained in the filename.
I am satisfied with the program Wise Jetsearch. Simple, effective and fast.

There are actually several freebies like one called Everything you can run while the original Search is still there but hidden from view since MS is promoting Cortana which is also used on the Tablet platform. 10 you have to remember is now dual platform unlike 7 and other older versions that were single platform only. Touchscreen support has also been vastly improved as well for both platforms.
