Can anybody get Windows 10 Backup & Restore to work, I mean actually restore an image back to their HDD?

    Definitely ....... yes.
Did that since Windows 7 and been doing that 1st day of Windows 10 Technical Preview and now Win 10 RTM.

In fact it has had saved me several times when I needed to restore the system.
But I use an external hard drive to save the image backup.

Alternatively you can use free Macrium which has more functions than the Windows thingy.

Thanks davidhk, there seems to be plenty of internet comments regarding Windows10 not finding any external HDD's?

Well, that never happens to me and I do system image backup regularly, about once a month or after heavy updates.

Yes, Macrium is the bible of clone to me, it does good with backups, it is a matter of buying few bucks worth of external drive adapter or enclosure and it will not fail you. What anti virus ? any time some thing is not right, just use the backup and you are in business. Make sure your clone regularly.

Have done another backup just. Rebooted with Windows installation disc & tried repair. Cannot find image on this computer. Gone to restore files (advanced) select the backup you want to restore files from, refresh finds nothing. I now have Acronis 2015 which does the job, but its so irritating when you can't get something to work!!

The Windows imaging is pretty messy. That's a known fact.
