    startup

My computer has been acting strange all day. Websites not responding etc. I rebooted to see if that would help. It did, partially. Now when I left click the windows icon all I get is a big black rectangle with my name at the top and "power" and "all apps" at the bottom. What can I do?

Have you installed any new programs before the problem started?

Sounds possibly like corrupt system files. Is this a custom built computer or brand name?

It's a Lenovo I bought at Best Buy. I downloaded an anti-viral program that I used on my old computer. I didn't have any problem with it on that one.

I just restored the system date and that didn't help at all.

    Hello :)

The usual way to get out of this is to repair system files that have become corrupted. The usual route is to run the system file checker and see if it sorts things out, it may not and so the next step is to run the DISM tool to restore files.

    1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del, this should give you the link to Task Manager where you can click File and with the Ctrl key held down click Run new task. The Administrator: Command prompt should now be open.
    2. Enter sfc /scannow in the Administrator: Command Prompt window.
    3. Wait until it has completed and see what is reported. This will take several minutes. You may want to do a restart to see if there is any improvement.
    4. If still not fixed then proceed to the DISM which is run as before from the Administrator: Command Prompt window. Enter the following command: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    5. Again wait several minutes for it to complete and review the result. As before restart and see if it has made any difference.

Post back your results and we will help you further if needed. Here are a couple of tutorials which go through the procedure in more detail:

I actually got up the next morning and everything was fine!! I don't know what was going on. Phil - I saved your instructions and I will give it a try. But for now everything seems to be working fine!

    Thanks!

    Hi, lady.

Just a question, in case you revisit this thread:

You say you just bought this Lenovo laptop at Best Buy and that you downloaded and installed on it an anti-viral program that worked well for you on another machine.

The question - was there already an anti-viral or security type software (sometimes with a 90 day trial subscription or something like that) pre-installed on the laptop?

The reason I ask is that multiple security softwares can conflict with each other if not paired appropriately and could cause the kind of behavior you reported.

Understood that you may no longer have the problem but thought I'd ask the question that popped into my mind when you first mentioned the security software.
