I learnt years ago (Windows 7) that you never put anything but a shortcut onto the desktop, and then you hid the desktop icons so you could put a nice background there, with the desktop toolbar in the task bar for easy, one-click-hold-move, then one-release-click access to absolutely anything on your system. My Start Menu became an irrelevance long before Windows 8 arrived.

Hi. Thank you all for your replies.

I use Office 2010, I don't store nothing on the cloud (and at the moment I don't have any files there) and my Windows Defender isn't detecting anything wrong.
Windows 10 forces Office to save all files in One Drive. You have to go into the Office Settings and change that. The Recent Items in Office, will tell you where it was saved to.

"Windows 10 forces Office to save all files in One Drive."
Not in 2010 Professional which I have used in both 8.1 and 10. It has the legacy file explorer window open when you hit Save or Save as and you choose the Save location. I know 2016 operates this way and gives you a massive amount of OneDrive cloud space but 2010 does not.

Yes in 2010 when you are running Windows 10, Windows 10 forces the default storage space for files as One Drive.

Unless you make the change in Settings or in Office. All files will be written to the cloud and a copy stored in the One Drive folder.

Every machine that I have worked on that has 10. I have always disabled One Drive from being used in any way for storing anything but the roaming profile.

The first rule in troubleshooting in a matter like this is since it does not show up on the desktop, documents, then you check the Temp folder and the One Drive folder locations.

It is just that some do not have the time, along with being frustrated at how Microsoft has made very drastic changes with 10, compared to XP, Vista, 7 & 8.

Also 2013 was the first Office product that incorporated Microsoft's Cloud Drive Service and Social Media accounts. 2016 is nothing more then a GUI interface for 365, so that those who do not want 365, still get the feeling that they are using traditional Office peoducts, but in the background, everything is running off of the Cliud if you are online m, or stored in Documents or One Drive if offline, until you connect online.

It there fro recovery purposes for changes to an Office file. In case file your working on gets damaged you can recover the file. It disappears if you close Excel or the document.

The file has a ~ in front of it.
