    Tips & Tricks

Post any tips, tricks, or workarounds here.

How to use Windows 10 Technical Preview
    PC
    Start
    Search
    Cortana
    Apps
    Photos
    File Explorer
    Maps
    Xbox
    Personalization and settings
    Touch and keyboard
    Updates and feedback

Windows Keyboard shortcuts (there's probably a tutorial)

The best place to find tips and tricks is, of course, the TenForums
    Tutorials section
Browse by category, or search for a keyword (Start Menu; Notification; Dual Boot; Network; etc).
Tip: Try a few different terms as the search criteria (Start Menu / Start Screen / Start) - most tutorials use Microsoft terminology

And don't forget to check the index to the Tutorials to quickly locate the information you need:
    Tutorials Quick Reference Index

There's a lot of Win8 in Win10 - if there isn't a tutorial here on TenForums (TF), there might be one that answers your need over on EightForums (EF). See the EF Tutorials section and the Index of EF Tutorials

Check Microsoft Preview forums, blogs, and Press kits for fixes, workarounds, tips, and news:
Windows Insider Program - Microsoft Community
    Blogging Windows
    Windows Newsroom

If you can't find it in those places, you might find something of interest in this thread.

Set the action taken by the Notification Tiles

    Tutorial: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3...dows-10-a.html

You can somewhat arrange the Quick action tiles in the Notification tray.
(QuickTiles might be a good name)

    Settings -> System -> Notifications & actions

    Tips & Tricks-quicktiles-set.png

Press one of the four quick actions and choose the action from the list for that tile.

The change is immediately reflected in the Notification tray

    Tips & Tricks-quicktiles.png

Press one of the four quick actions and choose the action from the list for that tile.

You can only affect the topmost tiles (4) - hopefully that will change so users can add or subtract tiles and choose any tile / any action.

edit: I should have written this post when I 'discovered' it two days ago .... or learn to type faster ....15 minutes! Thanks Shawn, just saw your tutorial

Live tiles: how to turn off in 9926

I don't know the answer ... I've tried changing Settings -> System -> Notfications & actions : apps notification settings (Off | ON) and played with Advanced ( ... banner ???) for an app.

Nothing I've tried seems to change the behavior - live tiles always receive push notifications.

Workaround: Revert to the previous Start (resizable); right click the tile; turn off live tile
    Tutorial: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3...dows-10-a.html

    add a Start toggle:
    Tutorial: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...text-menu.html

I haven't tried changing the Start back to the 9926 Start presentation (expandable) to see if Live Tiles OFF setting sticks.

You can't turn off live tiles in 9926:
    Tutorial: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3...dows-10-a.html
Windows 10 build 9926 uses a new expandable Start menu without a Start screen and Apps screen by default now. This new Start menu doesn't currently have an option for turning off live tiles.

If you use the old resizable Start menu or Start screen, then you will be able to still turn on or off live tiles.

Pin to Start; Pin to Start List, Pin to Taskbar

Edwin posted this very neat trick:
Pin options : Press and hold 'Shift' while right clicking

edit: Found this while trying to cutomize Start by brute force (adding shortcuts to the Start menu Folder)

I'm not sure if it's a throw back to Quick Access Bar (quick launch) or something planned for Quick Action tiles in Norifications or something completely different.

    Tips & Tricks-pin-quick-access.png

edit 2: The Home location is now rechristened Quick access on Explorer.
MS is going to have to work on their lexicon - why not just call it Home!

BTW: nothing was pinned to Quick access (Home) when I clicked Pin to Quick access
Quick launch, Quick access bar, Quick access ... it will get confusing and cause me to write even longer posts.

One I haven't seen posted yet turned out to pretty darned easy so not much of a trick,
Get rid of the large search box on the taskbar,
Right click the taskbar and properties/ search use search icon turns into the magnifying glass :/
Disable and it's gone and only appears with the winkey

Show lock screen on startup I believe it was in group policy ?
Could of been Do Not show lock screen :/

The search has actually improved over all prior versions :)
Unfortunately for all of the good Microsoft found more bad to add Popular now and Bing image of the day is just iritating
But yes group policy seems useless with the new search
Do not search web seems pretty freaking clear :)
