    Hello Nigel, :)

If you unpin and pin the app to taskbar again, does it help?

Hi Shawn, the icon is not pinned, just the one that appears when there is an app running. In other words, I open a PDF with Acrobat Reader DC and the Photoshop icon appears in the taskbar.

In that case, you might see if setting the default app for the file type again may help.

Wrong Taskbar Icon For Running App Fix

I looked high an low, finally found a solution that helped me. A strange icon has invaded my PC.
It shows up a lot of places on my PC.

For the situation where the icon for the running application was wrong in the taskbar, it was also wrong in the application's shortcut, located in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

I deleted the incorrect shortcut, created a new shortcut for the app on my desktop, and moved it to the . . .\Start Menu\Programs folder. That fixed the bugger!

For some reason, I had to change the incorrect shortcut permissions to be able to delete it.

Thank you! I've had some icons showing up incorrectly (with the generic "blank" icon) for months. Fixing the icon in the Start Menu\Programs seemed to do the trick!

Tip: There may be a correct shortcut in the Public Desktop folder. In that case, then you can just copy it over instead of having to create a new one from scratch.
