    Mystere,
Here is how it looks to me as a consumer.
It looks to me like windows 10 is being marketed to business and enterprise users.
It also looks like Microsoft is making it easier for developers and third party to run their program on mobile, and desktops.

Microsoft would never stop supporting the desktop, the reason is laptops. A laptop is a mobile desktop.
Of course it is, just like Windows 8 and 8.1 were, but this wasn't the PRIMARY market for these releases. In fact, Microsoft barely put any effort into enterprise support and in 10 it's not that much different. And the reason is obvious, the WinRT api is still not fully mature enough to support enterprise development.

When the WinRT api is at a feature parity with Win32, you will see things change pretty radically. Both in terms of how MS markets the OS to enterprise, as well as how the OS functions... Even today, WinRT is still a second class citizen to Win32, but one day that will flip. WinRT will be the primary API and Win32 will become secondary. You won't log into Win32, you will log into WinRT.

When will that be? I don't know.. 3 years? 5 years? I don't know what MS's roadmap is on this.

However, laptop sales are declining as well. But in general, laptops are considered desktops and not mobile devices. Mobile devices are tablets and phones. And I was quite clear that desktops (including laptops) won't go away, but most people will own 2-3 mobile devices for every desktop device (desktop or laptop). I know I own 5 desktops and 15 mobile devices in my family. On top of that, there are IoT devices on the horizon... set top boxes, connected appliances, car computers, wearable devices (smart bands, etc..). This market is huge. And its time has finally come.

The mobile market is still waiting for a few things to make it truly the dominant market.. and that mostly revolves around human input devices... Once they can conquer keyboard quality input in mobile devices from anywhere... there's no telling how that will skyrocket and where desktops will plummet to.

Today, through remote access technologies, I can run any desktop application on my phone or tablet using Remote App or VMWare View or XenApp technologies. Other than a keyboard and mouse, why do I need a desktop? And again, once they conquer the input challenges... desktops are doomed.

Let's get back to the basics of the original question - 'Why would I change from Windows 7 to Windows 10'?

"Why should I buy a new car, this one runs fine"?

I very much doubt that desktops and laptops are doomed. I am one of those individuals that don't have a smartphone. I do have a basic cell phone that can receive test & voice calls and it is prepaid with very good rate. I am cheap. If it cost to much, I don't buy it. I hate to bring this up here, but there will always be Linux, and BSD. Now, this new hybrid all-in-one-desktop. I see them to be around for a long time to come. Most all-in-ones have Ethernet and wifi built-in

I don't think that analogy is accurate. To me it is more like, "Why should I switch my car over to use a different fuel when it runs fine on it's existing fuel?"

If I buy a new car, I would expect it to use the newer fuel but my old car runs perfectly fine with the fuel it has been using all along. If the new fuel gave ME some advantages such as increased power or better gas mileage than great but if it's just that it's a prettier color then, "What's the point"?

I like the new car smell. So also I like the sway of a new OS installed on a new desktop.

Pfft. Better start bulking up on your programming skills, because if something borks then you're problably going to have to edit some code or make use of the command line.

2020 is not as far away as it might seem. That's 5 years. Windows 7 was released 6 years ago. So it's life is already more than half over.

I guess you haven't seem my other posting, here is a screen shot of my grub customizer. I really like apt-get. Note, this screenshot was taking when I was testing out windows 10.

I only had a couple of issues on linux. Thunderbird email web links to won't work correctly. Whenever I open Google chrome or Chromium. A crash message pops-up. Google chrome or Chromium still opens and works without issue. Just a little annoyance but I can tolerate it.
