This debate about price and support is a side show. The important question is whether the new OS provides something that I want and like. I started this thread trying to find out what you guys consider enough meat on the bone to make it worthy to switch. Because if there were nothing that I wanted or needed, why switch. Being the latest OS does not necessarily mean that it is the best OS for me or for you.
While I agree the latest isn't always the best but now I think that the latest is the best for me at least. It gives me the start menu that I really wanted in Win8.1 and that's better than classic shell, IMO.

Windows 10 upgrade will be free for devices running activated versions of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 with Update, (Enterprise versions excluded), for a period of 365 days.
What happens after the 365 day period has not been decided and/or confirmed as of yet.
    Edwin,
I thought Brink already confirmed that issue that it would be the life of the device.

The issue that concerns me what is the life of the device? Microsoft Marketing needs to get better definition of what this means for windows 10 and above computers. This will actually make me decide whether or not get another computer that has windows on it.

The price thing is kina silly. People who pay will pay and them who find a way to not pay will not pay. As to why to switch don't. I have been running dual boot with 7 since we started in Oct. its great that way for me. I will stay that way having two main os's till what they say 2020? And I like Cortona I think you should turn her back on. I use her for my spell checker.

The life of the device is how long the device lasts before it breaks.

    Indeed.
I assume the key bit is that the free Windows 10 upgrade licences won't be transferable to another device - like an OEM licence.

That's how I interpreted the statement too.

    I can live with that!

I am sure Cortana is useful if you have a laptop with a built in mic. But I work on desktops and would need to have that mic around my ears all day long - not practical. Once I need Cortana, I might buy a mic that I can stand on the desk.

If it's anything like Blackberry Assistant then you can type what you would normally say. Like type "time" to get the current time and day or type "email Laura at work subject it is done and I will see you soon message oh and bring cake." and it will compose an email to Laura's work address with the subject and message filled so you just have to click send.

caperjack. The insider program has not said free for using and giving feedback. It has ask us to upgrade from build to build till who knows when. Then what? More than likely I will buy new pc with 8.1 on it then put my 7 on it and upgrade my 8.1 to ten. Simple as that. Maybe some other options will arise between now and then.
