. I will stay that way having two main os's till what they say 2020?
but how, this preview is not going to turn into a full free version of win10 for us ,unless I missed something
caperjack. The insider program has not said free for using and giving feedback. It has ask us to upgrade from build to build till who knows when. Then what? More than likely I will buy new pc with 8.1 on it then put my 7 on it and upgrade my 8.1 to ten. Simple as that. Maybe some other options will arise between now and then.
you just might be right ,depends on how you intrepid this part and if there is a update of this statement [15 days prior to the expiration date to remind you that it’s time to upgrade your computer to a newer version]

    quote-
    When does the preview expire?

April 15, 2015 for Build 9879 or earlier builds; October 1, 2015 for Build 9926. If you’re running Windows 10 Enterprise Technical Preview, we’ll start to send you notifications about 15 days prior to the expiration date to remind you that it’s time to upgrade your computer to a newer version.

Not nesaceraily, I would bet that most of the Win10 testers already have or are using either WIn7 or Win8.1 so that 2Million is accounted for already. But, it would be nice if you could just upgrade from the CR/TP directly to the RTM.

Upgrades sometimes come with activation keys
My win-8 Pro "free" upgrade did come with a activation key but was a download iso.

That, and slower, limited broadband with a monthly bandwidth cap, a fact M$ is too blind to see (or just doesn't care).

This debate about price and support is a side show. The important question is whether the new OS provides something that I want and like. I started this thread trying to find out what you guys consider enough meat on the bone to make it worthy to switch. Because if there were nothing that I wanted or needed, why switch. Being the latest OS does not necessarily mean that it is the best OS for me or for you.

Remember - I am undecided up to now and keep my options open. I am not against W10, but I am still wondering why I would want it. But if I hear why you would want it, that may give me some clues.
We are both in the same boat. While I will stipulate that Win 10 is an improvement over Win 7 (and is one heck of an improvement over Win 8.x) so far, it isn't enough of an improvement to upgrade from an OS I'm familiar with that will work with all my software and hardware. Also, there are a few minor details (such as the ugly, flat colors with no shading that makes everything blend in together onscreen and the nonsense one has to go through to install it) that discourage me from wanting to upgrade. I also prefer to wait until something has been out for a while to give it time to get the worst of the bugs worked out.

The life of the device is how long the device lasts before it breaks.
    Indeed.
I assume the key bit is that the free Windows 10 upgrade licences won't be transferable to another device - like an OEM licence.
And to me that is somewhat galling. Most of my licences for 7 and all of my licences for 8 are retail licences which means I can install them on whatever machine I like (one at a time) and if I upgrade my 7 licences to 10 if I lose that ability I won't be upgrading. You know what I mean if you are a geek, you always have the next system you are building on the drawing board. The 8 licences will go but the 7 Ultimate no way Microsoft..........

I'm going to give up my W7 to upgrade, and keep my 8.1.

You know the saying, Beggars can't be choosers. Microsoft is giving you a free upgrade. So they impose a few restrictions. It's still better than having to buy a full retail license. If you need to install on another system, you can always go out and buy a new license at that point. You would have had to buy that license anyways if MS hadn't given you the free one.

Wow, what a sense of entitlement... No, this free license just isn't good enough!
