I knew I shouldn't have upgraded to Win 10

If the drive is dying, I'd say that's his biggest issue. Loss of data would trump slow graphics in my book. I completely agree that a dedicated graphics card would help out tremendously, but once he has a stable system.

I've upgraded quite a few that dated as far back as 2006 (OEM Vista, XP etc.) with no particular problems.
More often than not it's laptops that seem to be the more troublesome somehow. YMMV.

It works fine upgrading from Windows 7. You need a stable system before attempting any upgrade, but that's always been the case. Besides, most enthusiasts perform a clean install after the upgrade is complete anyway, and I believe in later builds of Windows 10, you can go right to a clean install by inputting an 8.1 key during setup.

You are right there. There was a change in CPU requirements in 8.1 for NX. If you are running 8.1 then 10 will definitely work (excluding drivers). If you are running 8 or earlier it will only probably work (especially if you have an older AMD CPU or some Pentium 4).

I'm running 10 on 2006 Core2Duo and that works absolutely fine (it must have the right instructions I guess, I never looked)

First, I want to thank everyone for your replies and help. I'm running a Pentium 2.7 E5400 dual-core overclocked to 2.9 on a Biostar G31-M7 TE mobo with 4 gigs of 6400 DDR2 and a WD 200 gig HD. The light clicking of the hard drive is normal. Not loud or grinding like a failing drive. I checked it with Crystaldiskinfo and says it is in good shape. Win 7 works VERY well on it. Here's a bit of good news. Last Night (Tuesday night) I turned off the computer to find there a bunch of updates. It said not to turn off the computer as it was updating. It took about a1/2 hour. Might have something to do with my slow DSL. This morning I booted up and was surprised to see it boot up a lot faster! I mean a LOT faster. It is a lot more responsive now. Menus appear almost instantly. Clicking on a picture to view is a lot faster. Opening and closing windows are a lot faster also. Everything is definitely faster. Had to be the updates doing do. I never changed anything. I remember reading where you can't turn off updates with Win 10 and Microsoft sends them out on Tuesdays. Could the updates have been the answer? I remember getting some bad updates with XP and 7. Not fond of the idea that I can't install just the updates I want.

Good news to hear. Make sure you image your drive before trying another upgrade. It's also suggested to remove any anti-virus or anti-malware software before doing the upgrade. i.e. malwarebytes, admuncher, or any other anti virus software.

My computer guy told me not to download 10 because he was having lots of trouble with it. I decided to do it on a laptop I use at home and should have listened to him. First could not connect wirelessly to router with error message saying something about certain protocols not installed. Tried the fixes recommended on Google search but still nothing. Finally Fios tech guy remotely connected and said it was all set but next day same thing. Another Fios tech guy tried but no luck. These were pretty savvy guys so I gave computer to my computer guy who recommended going back to seven and now everything is perfect.
