Can someone point me in the direction of the 'real' upgrade benefits

Like many professional people I have several hard drives and networks that I access regularly. I know what I am doing, my directory structures and where I want to store or locate things. As a photographer I have terrabytes upon terrabytes of data, and deep complex directories.

Windows explorer worked perfectly in XP in my opinion. Since then there have been several very annoying issues such as.

1. Forcing libraries on people
2. Forcing cloud storage on people.
3. Having CP links in explorer.
4. The left panel folder links not expanding when I go deep into a directory structure, meaning I cannot easily see or navigate.
5. or using other options it always expands to the bottom so you can't see it.
6. Not having 'save as' as a simple default so I can put things where I want with my defaults.

and several similar other problems. They are all well documented and complained about on the internet.

I'm not going to get into an argument that you think libraries and cloud etc. are better, if you like them fine, whatever.
But its not good for me and I should be able to configure what I want.

DON'T CHANGE !!!! I'm the fourms newest member, typing on my lap top, BECAUSE I updated a perfectly good Win 8 machine yesterday ! OVER 5 hours wasted & I have no idea how to fix or use my desktop now !!

Sure you can, in worst case scenario you can reinstall whichever windows you upgraded from. Just because you upgraded doesn't mean you lost license for underlying one. If you still have windows.old folder you won't have to do clean installation.

THANKs Mike, But, I'm asking you to read my post " Can I go back" is new & just a few from here. Any ideas would be great.

I also had a working system using Windows 7 Pro which I did decide to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro via a clean install. I use the PC for photography and as an audio workstation (DAW) . Like you I have many files (photographs and audio) across my own disks and directory structure.
My system has 3 monitors all calibrated and profiled and a 26 in 26 out audio interface.

My reason for upgrading was to ensure ongoing compatability with the latest DAW software and drivers which are constantly updated. I do not use many of the "novelties" that came with W10.

However - after a short learning curve to set things up the way I like them:
I have no problems using my old familiar disk and directory structure for data files - libraries and cloud are not "forced" on me.
I actually came to like the tiled startup arrangement to the extent that I cleared my old desktop shortcuts.
The set up of the SSD drive was simple and handled correctly by W10 and there has been no issue with my spinning drives.
I have set up Windows to advise me of updates - that way I choose when it is convenient to do so (same as I did in W7)

Whilst the above are not compelling reasons to upgrade - hopefully they may take away some of the fears of doing so if you decide to go ahead.

I agree with Dave that once you learn how to customize Win10 to your liking it can easily replace Win7 while having everything remain very familiar. As I don't have a touch screen I use StartIsBack to get my Start menu back, I applied the various Registry tweaks posted on numerous websites to restore the old familiar clock and volume interface, made IE my default browser, used 'Spybot Anti-Beacon' to easily disable Cortana and all the telemetry stuff. If someone sees my desktop and how I work with this computer they would really think it was Windows 7.

I set my updates to 'Notify but do not download' so I can do them when it suits me, though I never wait too long. Apparently folks who are running the 'Home' version of Win10 can only get automatic updates so the more expensive versions do have that added feature.

So, while I'm not rushing to update my other 3 computers from Win7Pro to Win10, I at least now know that it's not such a big deal and I what I'll end up with can look and behave very much as I'm used to. At the same time I will have access to whatever improvements Wn10 has to offer.
