It seems I spoke too soon!

24 hours after a 'successful clean install' - I am again losing search and also edge. When called up they show on the screen briefly - then after a second or so disappear.
I'm I the only one with this problem? or is this a known (as yet uncorrected) MS quirk?
As always your suggestions and help would be appreciated.

Have you noticed it happening after any particular action?

As Brink said, you will want to isolate the issue. Some things to do in the meantime:

Sometimes, Microsoft provides (crap) drivers that don't work well with certain computers. Most often these computers are older and their manufacturers do not provide Windows 10 drivers at all, and MS finds generic or other that don't quite 'fit'. This has caused many many issues. See if your computer manufacturer has any drivers listed on its website for you (HP is found here: HP Software and Driver Downloads for HP Printers, Laptops, Desktops and More | HP® Customer Support
). I usually (personally) recommend using only the latest OS that drivers are provided for, meaning don't upgrade if your manufacturer is a jerk.

Antivirus programs sometimes cause such problems. The built in Defender works well enough if you find out that this is indeed the issue for you. So, if you have a 3rd party antivirus program installed, try uninstalling and restarting to see if it helps with your problem. If not, no sweat, just reinstall it! If you don't even have a 3rd party antivirus, just skip this bit.

There are a lot of startup programs and plenty of other things that bog down the system. Try running Malwarebyte's MBAM program to see if you can catch any PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) and other baddies your antivirus might not have caught. It is free, and highly recommended on this very forum and others. Find it here: Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware & Internet Security Software | In addition, see if this tutorial can give you ideas on how to speed things up: Optimize and Defrag Drives in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

    Hi Folks

To Brink I would say that no particular action or event comes to mind - other than the tweak I did to overcome the double entry quirk.
The failings seem to meander into the equation - for example late yesterday I found that regedit now stops responding after a minute or so's use! This in addition to Edge appearing and disappearing + the search facility no longer working at all (wont load).

To Dusty - I will look at the driver issue, but things such as AV and MBAM etc have all been done.
Your note about defrag is also taken care of - I use perfect Disk.

I so want to use Windows 10 - but these recurring annoyances suggest to me that perhaps I should go back to Win7 (old faithful) and try Win 10 when it is more 'settled' perhaps.
Meanwhile keep the ideas coming - your thoughts are appreciated.

As a point of interest, I have an old slow laptop running win 10 (32 bit) and have not experienced the problems encountered on my new 64 bit system machine.

    PS
Have just found that I cannot add an additional user in uac - the details folder comes up as a greyed out small box and then promptly vanishes

    Right - 16-30 on the 26-12-15
Going for one last Clean install - this time I will not do the 'duplicated entry tweak' as the last two times.
I will leave Defender as my AV - set up email etc, and add Office 2007. Will also install Chrome. Will see if this survives beyond 24 hours!!

    Wish me luck!

I recommend against using perfect disk.. Windows is suited to optimizing itself. Or at least testing to see if it works without it at first. Just my opinion

Interesting recommendation re Perfect Disk - I will hold off for the present.
Are there any other programs that experienced users would recommend Not to install (EG CCleaner)

    Here is the latest!

All went well at first. I added carefully some basic requirements, and all was functioning.
I cannot be positive on this BUT I noticed I had again lost search and edge after I had done a backup (Microsoft)

The search for an answer continues.

I give up (for the moment) - I like W10 so will keep it for the present.

I can live without Edge, but it would be good to find a good third party search app. Any tried and trusted recommendations chaps?
In addition to my reported problems, I notice that regedit only works for a short period, and then stops!

There has got to be a common denominator in all this - I suspect a microsoft update?

Do make sure you are updated. The fastest browser trends to be chrome, so that is what I'd use.
