Lost access, very strange problems ?

Lost access, very strange problems ?

Earlier today I connected up a storage drive to my PC to do some house keeping and clear out loads of unwanted and duplicated stuff. It's a mechanical drive and not a SSD.
    But !
Somewhere along the line I lost access to the folders on my desktop.
My Computer, Network, various folders and short cuts and Flash Drives were all unobtainable ?
I was even unable to gain access to the folder with my password to come here and get help.
When I click on any of the above options, I get a quick flash of black screen and then back to the desktop with nothing opening.

My system uses two monitors configured for extended desktop.
So, I decided to connect up my old computer to gain access to these forums. This meant disconnecting one of my monitors so that it could be plugged into the old machine. By force of habit I clicked on one of the folders of the desktop that was giving problems and it opened !!

For some reason or another if I connect up the second monitor again, I am once again unable to open anything as already described. I have been using these two monitors for some time, and when connected to the old machine the second monitor works just fine. In fact both monitors are working just fine.

    Can anyone help ?

Just to check if the fault is hardware or software, I connected both monitors up to my old Windows 7 PC and everything performed as usual, exactly as it should do
I connected the two monitors back up to my Windows 10 PC and the problem was right back again ?!?!
